    Comfortable but needs some improvements

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Helmet is really comfortable but front clips are not deep enough if you're trying to hold a headlamp for caving or sketchy night activity. Trying to fit my black diamond icon on this helmet for caving was a nightmare. This will definitely be a great helmet for rock climbing but I'll keep searching for a good headlamp compatible helmet.

    Really nice

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

the helmet fits really well and looks great. I especially like the little lip on the front that prevents water from dripping on your face. The harness slides back into the helmet when not in use and the helmet bag protects the helmet when not in use.

    Snowboard Mountaineering/Summer Climbing

Great Helmet, would highly recommend for anyone who needs a versatile summer/winter helmet for mountaineering. Easily adjustable to fit a winter hat and or a summer baseball cap. Would not recommend for resort usage.

    Noggin > sexiness

Very nice basic helmet, finish is great for applying stickers (lots of people have this helmet, and if you don't want to accidentally swap head sweat I recommend labeling yours!). Highly recommended for climbing outside

    Drain bamage

I bought this helmet because I thought it would make me look cool as it turns out nothing makes me look cool. But its still a great helmet and I use it all the time.

Where to begin on this amazing helmet?

    Style.

Can a helmet have style you ask? Oh hell yeah it can! The El Cap has a slight brim which makes it very sleek looking. I really enjoy the matted look this helmet has--I have it in white, and my buddy has it in blue and we both love how the color is a bit subdued.

    Fit.

The helmet fits snug and is very straightforward with its slide headband. Other helmets have turn knobs and ways to tighten them that are not very intuitive. The El Cap is very easy to adjust before, during, and after your climb.

As a woman, I find it easy to fit a low ponytail under this helmet without it being uncomfortable and your hair is totally out of the way.

I have used this helmet on sport leads, canyoneering, and working at challenge courses.

    All around quality product!

    Comfortable and All-around Solid Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A close call my belayer had with a falling rock I dislodged finally scared me enough to get a helmet. I did some research and compared different products but I'll admit one reason I got the El Cap was because I thought it looked cool.
After using it regularly for a few months I couldn't be happier with the purchase. First of all, it looks as good in person as it did in the pictures, but more important than that, it's super comfortable. I'm the type of guy who usually hates helmets of any sort but this fits great and I never even notice it's on my head. It's also a breeze to adjust (as other reviewers said, it runs small. I've got a tiny head and the larger size fits me great). I've thankfully never had to really test this helmet's strength, but after several bumps against the wall, there's hardly any sign of wear. Furthermore, I do a lot of night climbing and the clips have worked great so far with my Petzl headlamp.
All in all, the El Cap is a super comfortable helmet that I'd recommend to anyone and will likely purchase again should this one need replacing.

    Comfortable and All-around Solid Helmet

    Worth the cash

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Scared myself into buying a helmet after a close call with falling rocks, I didn't do much research and thought "hey this looks nice." Later I bemoaned the extra money compared to a Petzl, but I've found the additional features and cool points to be worth the extra. Aside from that the hard shell is way nicer than i was expecting, its pretty scratched at this point, but where a lighter foam only helmet might be trashed this is still trucking. My only problem with it is that I've got a pretty good mane of hair going and it gets real sweaty on hot days, doubt that would be different with any other helmet though.

    Runs small

Good all round helmet. I do climbing, rappelling and caving. Look forward to putting it through the paces. I was charged for shipping on the return even though I reordered the next size up. It most definitely is a small fit.

      LightWeight, Comfortable

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet is an all around great helmet, is lightweight, and fits like a glove, I do suggest to size up as the largest size is even a bit small! I wear this helmet while belaying and it protects me from any unwanted falling rocks and the sun!

      Good all-around helmet

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I recently bought this helmet to use during a week-long Girl Scout Encampment. Every day was spent outside in full sun, teaching rock climbing and rappelling. Initially I bought the helmet because I like the way it looks, and because Mammut makes quality mountaineering/climbing gear. I wore it while belaying and climbing with a thin b-ball cap underneath (to help block the sun). It was comfortable to wear with and with out the b-ball cap and it was light enough for me to quickly forget that I was wearing it. I chose the white helmet to help keep my head cool while in the sun, and it worked great. The size adjustment sliders in the back are very easy to use, but since I am used to the typical knob adjuster it took a little time to learn. I found it takes two hands to adjust the helmet evenly on both sides, rather than just one hand to adjust a knob. The helmet sits a little bit higher than I expected due to the design of the interior foam (like a bicycle helmet). I will have to get used to it. I think this will be a great all-around helmet for belaying, climbing, rappelling, and general mountaineering. I plan to purchase a separate clip-on visor so I can ditch the b-ball cap (helping to keep my head cool and the sun off of my face).

      Favorite helmet

Bought this after my petzl died. Really happy. Great fit, comfortable and offers reasonable protection. Barely notice it's on. Harness could be a tad easier to adjust but I don't tend to touch it once it's set.

        Just bought my second one

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use mine mostly in the warmer months to facilitate climbing walls and high ropes. I haven't experienced a sizing issue with either helmet, and love the sliding adjustment in the back. The only downside is very rarely the small visor will block my vision when belaying, but only if I'm very close to the wall and it's very easy to fix. I haven't taken a fall or hit that affected the helmet, but the first one held up to two years of summer camp abuse (hanging on a backpack most of the day, kids trying it on, stuff like that) and is still around as a backup. It's comfortable for long sessions, but the visor makes wearing a hat underneath feel awkward if you're one of those folks.
Overall, my favorite parts of this helmet are that it's not very bulky, it holds up very well, and the slide adjustment on the back is comfortable to use and stays in place during long use.

        A good insurance policy!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Beware this helmet runs small, however if you get the right size it is a simple, lightweight , quality product! I've lent it out to friends and they have brought it back with good reviews as well!

        Safety First

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This helmet looks great and will protect you too. This helmet is an impact from above protection system. With the EPS foam being only on the top portion of the head. I really like the brim on the helmet, and am super stoked to see how it performs outdoors. The adjustment system on the back of the head can really make for a comfortable fit. Great buy!

        Unanswered Question

Has anyone tried this helmet on wearing belay glasses at the same time?Any hindrance from the visor on the vision on the glasses?

I just bought this helmet on steep and cheap in the smallest size (56-61). The straps seem to fit my head comfortably, but as one of the reviews pointed out, it looks like a child's helmet-- the shell is tiny! I'm not very familiar with fitted helmets or how this helmet should fit. How much of the back of your head should be covered by the shell? If anyone has pics of a good fit for this helmet, that might be helpful.

Hi, the smallest size should be 52-57 cm I believe. 56-61 is the larger helmet; however, you're right. The fit on the small one is WAAAAAY off. You should let Backcountry know and exchange it for the larger size. My head was 55 cm, but the larger one fits MUCH better on me. This is just a picture I found on google, but the fit looks good here. The small one sits way high on the head and is very tight--not good.

So apparently this isnt a very popular helmet?

At this point, I think you're right, but based on the fact that it's a relatively new helmet and also hard to find in stores to try on. Here's a link to a Backpacker magazine review, http://www.backpacker.com/gear-guide-2012-mammut-el-cap-helmet/articles/16549.

I just tried this helmet on at a local shop. It's extremely comfortable. I currently have a Mammut skywalker 2, that I seriously considered swapping out for this. The one thing that stopped me however was that the clips for a headlamp are very small and feel very fragile. To be honest I think they would probably break or lose their strength to keep the headlamp on after a few uses. My other concern was the visor. If you fall, that edge is going to catch and your face is going to go right into the rock or snow/ice. Just something to consider. If you don't plan on using a headlamp with this helmet then I would definitely recommend it.
