- Q & A
Excellent mid layer
I recently wore this while walking around the neighborhood for breakfast in the low 50s. Was okay. Not question in my mind that for its intended use as a garment for hiking/mountaineering it will be perfect. This is fleece, and as such it is not wind proof. If you want wind proof, get their Extreme collection softshell. I am 5'11" and a bit over 210 (need to drop some weight) and the XL fit is good. Not perfect, but good enough that it does not keep me from thinking about buying a third one. I have the dark orange and the cyan. Somebody said the neck was too high. Perhaps. Better high than too short.
Eiswand at the 'Ghee
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
This is an expensive jacket, however it performed flawlessly at the "Ghee with 21" of fresh pow over a 4 day period. I used it as a mid layer mostly while skiing and as an outer layer while traveling in the car. It kept me dry and warm while working hard in fresh snow. My down jacket was too warm and swampy. The Eiswand breathed much better and kept me dry and warm. During apres ski the waitress cannot miss you in the orange version so that's a nice bonus for getting more Deep Powder Pale Ale in a timely fashion. The neck is tight but not suffocating. Depending on how you shave the fully zipped neck may pull on your stubble. I solved this problem by not shaving. You'll fit in better with the locals too. The dual zipper allows you to visit the john without taking anything off. The sleeves are a little long and allow you to use the thumb hole efficiently. There are 2 open top storage pockets inside and zippered pockets outside (2 hand & 1 chest). My iPhone fit nice in the chest pocket and my battery level stayed high since the phone was always warm inside my shell. It was a charm to drive long distances in too. Not too light. Not too heavy. I liked the close fit. I'm 195lbs 69" and muscular. The large was form fitting but not tight. Worked great with Mammut Trift pants and suspenders.
Probably not worth the money
There are some pretty good things about this jacket. It is very lightweight and very formfitting. It is perfect as a mid layer beneath a shell. You could probably even get another layer in without sacrificing too much bulk or moveability. For how light it is it seems to be very warm. It's about 30° F here today and I kept feeling shocked at how warm I was considering how light and thin this jacket is. The problems that I have are mainly with the neck and the supposed wind resistance. I have a pretty big neck (16.5-17in)and so this may just apply to me but the neck is pretty tight. I feel a little bit like I am being strangled when I have it zipped all the way up. It doesn't help that it is extremely long. My neck isn't particularly short so there isn't much excuse for this. Another thing is that right in the description it says it's meant to be wind resistant. There is about zero wind resistance in this thing. That is fine with me because I intend to wear it underneath a shell but it isn't something that will retain any warmth on a windy day without some help.
Is the black colour the version as displayed on the Mammut website?
The color we have is the same model but different year. It is this years model (2015-16) and if you order the jacket it will be the color that you see in our photo. The model on the Mammut website is last years (2014-15), you can tell because it has been marked down. I hope that this helps a please call or chat in if you need any more help.
