Normally wear a 12W, but decided to give these a try and bought a 12.5. The fit is great. They're just about the most comfortable shoes I've worn. The support is great and they're built like tanks. I sure hope Mammut keeps on making the Ayako.

Sole is insanely stiff. Its like a wearing a hardcore boot without the ankle support. So when you hit a rock or stick on the trail this will take you foot and twist it. I have had other approach shoes from salewa wildfires that were nothing like this. I will say they are beautiful shoes and totaly waterproof. If you want a shoe that is like a tank boot then this might be the shoe for you.

Yes, this is a stiff shoe because it's designed to be used to climb rock and you need that stability in the whole shoe, to climb. But, will also be secure on dirt sections of your approach to the rock, because it has deep lugs in the heal and scattered throughout the forefoot.

Quality shoe

I switched to only using approach shoes for hiking in Arizona and Utah awhile ago and don’t think I’ll ever go back to regular hikers. I’ve had the guide tennies, Boulder X and now these. So far these are my favorite. I was hesitant to order these, because I’d never tried on any Mammut shoes before. First inspection is this shoe is well made, high quality, great traction and nice and sticky for scrambling. Heel would slip initially but after about the first 45 mins of hiking in them, it formed to the foot and didn’t slip anymore. I have a pretty wide foot and these have plenty of room. I’ve only used them once for a short 4 miler with some scrambling but I’m impressed so far. The Sizing seems pretty accurate.

Thank you for the review, John!

I forgot about the heal slip. I thought it was just me but mine did the same thing. I thought i just had the wrong size for me. Also it hurt the top of my foot where the shoe bends,.

How can I ensure I get a 9.5 in American sizes?
