My Forever Shoe

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
7.5

After trying out a bunch of climbing shoes, I'm pretty sure the Drone Comps will be my forever shoe. It's the fantasy shoe I've been looking for: outrageously comfortable, great for edging, and sticks to everything. I've never felt so sure on my feet before. Really blows away the competition on fit, comfort, and rubber. There really is no rubber this sticky. I'm sorry, but I will never climb in XS Grip 2 again. And it manages to be this sticky without being too soft. The comfort is outstanding. My toes crimp and are held in that position cozily with no hot spots or painful pressure. Best of all, there's enough room at the forefoot for all of my toes without pushing them in at an unhealthy angle. I have hereditary bunions and it was extremely important that the shoe not push in the toes since that would worsen the bunions (any worse and I'll need surgery). The soft rubber has stretched to accommodate my bunions fine. So I highly highly recommend this shoe to anyone with bunions. And I'm pleased that Drone went the way of having a full sole on a comp shoe. I'm 135 lbs, and I find it the toe plenty supportive enough for small foot chips with no toe pain (including on my twisted big toes). The shoe tension is perfect - it bends when you need it, but won't give out on small feet. Since the first session, I could wear them for 2 hours straight without having to take them off, and when I do remove them at the end of a session, my toes feel fine - no foot pain! The maker said they made only the toe curve down aggressively unlike other brands which start the downturn in the middle of the foot, which is uncomfortable since there's no joint in the middle of your sole. It works -- the shoe feels almost flat but isn't, and it still works great in overhangs. A couple comparisons: Unparallel Flagship - amazing shoes, but not as good for my feet. They push my big toe inward and are less comfortable overall (though quite reasonable for an aggressive shoe). They're also softer, which made my big toes hurt on small feet. Regular Drones - waaay too clunky. Returned immediately. Tenaya Iati and Tarifa - both pushed my big toes in, were too narrow, too stiff, and had slippery rubber. I find all La Sportivas quite uncomfortable as well as the Scarpa Instinct S. Also tried the new Scarpa Vapor S and the La Sportiva Kubo - both flat-lasted shoes for comfort, but both of them were strangely tight in the toe which led to them being less comfortable than the Drone Comps! Take it from me -- if you want a combination of comfort and performance, it just doesn't get any better than these. Drone really nailed it! (FYI, I wear size 7 in street shoes and had to size up to 7.5 for a comfortable fit).

This is my first pair of Madrocks, but I'm soooo incredibly happy that these are my first pair. To note, the Drones CS do run pretty true to size. They have about ¼ to ½ size stretch, but I made the mistake of going with a pair that felt "just right" before getting on the wall. After 2 sessions, the stretch factor became much more apparent. They have a very interesting flex point in the midsole that I was not expecting and took a bit of getting used to, BUT now I love it. I truly allows me to apply a bit of extra force to physically wrap the shoe around a hold. The flex is why I wish I went down half a size. Go with a fit that's as uncomfortably snug without being painful as possible. They do fit snugger than the OG drones & drone 2.0's. The rubber, super sticky, as advertised. love love love them, will definitely be getting another pair when the time comes.

Great fit with a perfect edge!

I have had several pairs of Mad Rock shoes and these are my favorite! They are more aggressive (down-turned) than my Drone LVs and I’m able to edge better in them. The whole shoe is also a little more narrow than my Drone LVs (which are also size 6.5) and that fits my foot better. Overall, I feel that I have more control with them and they are stickier. I’m a big fan!
