These hiking boots are the best
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- 40
This is my second pair. The first pair are still going strong but wanted a second pair just in case. They are sturdy and strong with a vibram sole. Best hiking boot I have owned that is not ankle high.

Good shoe, bad fit for wide feet
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- 41
I normally wear a 9.5W, so I purchased 41. It felt great width-wise, but it was way too long. I then tried the 40.5 as well, but the width was so narrow that even after loosening the laces, just sitting in them for 20 minutes had my feet aching. Otherwise they felt rugged, sturdy, and not too heavy.

I thoroughly read reviews on these Spire GTX Hiking Shoe before prucahsing. I already love my La Sportiva hiking boots I got last year. Those are a 39.5 (Size 8). I ordered a 39.5 in these. They are LEAST 2 sizes too large. They feel pretty stiff and a little bit heavy. However, my boots were like that too and they are best boots I have ever owned. These will be going back. Not happy at all with the return charge from Backcountry either. Not sure I will be ordering a smaller size with this return policy either, or anything else for that matter, as sizing is WAY off.

not waterproof; twisted ankles

I really wanted to like these shoes for hiking, but after three tries I'm moving on. First attempt was wrong size. The euro size I usually use in Birkenstocks was too small. Returned those and checked the size chart to get the correct size. I usually wear 8.5 and these felt true to size to me. On the 2nd attempt, the inside of the toes became sopping wet after about 10 minutes of walking around in wet grass with my dog. Surprising, as trail gear reviews of this shoe had touted their waterproofness after standing in a stream for 5 minutes. Backcountry customer service was kind enough to send a replacement pair to assess whether it was a one-time issue. Alas, the replacement pair had the same issue - sopping wet inside both toes after a short walk in mowed wet grass. Double checked that this wasn't due to moisture coming in through my socks- nope. Continuing on the walk on a gravel carriage trail, I twisted my ankle twice and skinned the other knee as a result of the soles and heels of these shoes being so thick. These shoes are super steady feeling if you are walking on flat ground, but the shoe being built up so much means that any ankle twist is more dramatic than usual if you catch a rut, rock, or root the wrong way. On the pro side, the shoes are attractive and look well constructed; they are wide enough to be comfortable at the forefoot. I appreciate the bomber vibram sole for hiking with a stiffer shank for support and a cushioned feel with each step.

I looked for a long time for a shoe with good grip, lighter than boots, stiffer soles, that looked good for the summer. This one seemed to fit the bill. The grip is good (equivalent to Merrel Moab), the sole is strong (not as flexible) to endure very rocky terrain, and it looks slim, and less bulky and ugly than other hiking shoes. After wearing it, am I still 100% convinced? No. Somewhat, the heal of the shoe, like many other reviewers said, is very wide and as I hike my feet feels unstable, too loose inside the shoe. Tying the laces over and over to keep it snug is a must. Also, little pebbles get in due to the wide back, nothing gaiters can't take care of. The harder sole protects the feet, but the insole seems to be bowed/curved, and my feet would get pretty tired towards the end of the day. I have another La Sportiva (Nucleo High II GTX) boot that I love, and unfortunately this one does not compare to that one. This review is based on the use over a week-long hike. I'm a size 8US, and both a 39 1/2. It fits fine.

This shoe is way more a hiking shoe than a running shoe. The sole is heavy and very stiff. The toes are a little narrow and it is a half size long. There is no arch support but there is room to change out the insole. It seems well made and should live up to the great reviews as a hiking shoe.

Spent the last 2 weeks in these incredibly reliable, super lightweight, yet durable hikers. We encountered snow, mud, rain, and every type of terrain while hiking National Parks. Great looking, comfortable, and kept my feet dry. Could not be happier. Purchased for my Daughters as well and we are all thrilled with this shoe. Highly recommend.

These shoes are great. I found it runs pretty true to size for me. I like how comfortable it is right out of the box and there is plenty of room for your foot and toes for ascent and descent. I would highly recommend these, they also look very stylish which is a big plus too!

Oddly runs big
- Familiarity:

i bought Euro 39 for women in both the La Sportiva Spire GTX and the Trail Ridge Low. Whereas the Trail Ridge Low in Euro 39 women fit perfectly, the Spire GTX was too big...I would say half size too big. Bushido II trail running shoe I wear women's 39.5. So, La Sportiva's sizing is all over the place for some reason, which makes relying on the sizing chart, whether here or on La Sportiva, impossible and perplexing.
