A lightweight, compact tent for three minimalist backpackers.

The 3-season, 3-person Kelty TN3 Tent meets the standards of minimalist backpackers thanks to its superlight design and its protective features. A stargazing fly rolls up and down quickly in case of a storm, and the tent cube packs the tent down to a minimum for more space in backpacks. The lightweight DAC Pressfit poles snap into the tent's color coded clips quickly, and Jake's Foot makes this tent freestanding.

Kelty constructed the TN3's walls out of no-see-um mesh for ventilation, the floor out of nylon for durability, and the fly out of sil-nylon ripstop to keep the tent as light as possible. Kelty also added PU coatings and taped the seams on the floor and fly for excellent water-resistance as well as abrasion-resistance.

The TN3 also features two oversize doors and two large vestibules for a convenient storage and entry/exit. Guyout points help set up the tent quickly, and noiseless zippers offer an undisturbed sleep to those who don't have to pee in the middle of the night. The TN3 also has internal storage pockets so everyone can remain organized for the entire trip.

    Thrilled with this tent

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My family uses two of these tents for backpacking and we are thrilled. The first time we used them we sat inside during a two hour torrential downpour and remained dry and happy. I could actually feel little rivers of water rolling under the tent, but the tent handled the wind and the rain like a champ. These are very light, easy to pack and set up, and offer a decent amount of square footage.

    Great little tent

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It takes a couple minutes to set up and a couple to take down and it can pack very tight into a backpack. All pluses in my book. I'm 6'1" and I sleep very comfortably in it; I've fit three guys over 6 feet in there without much problem. The sleeping mats tend to overlap, but that's not a bad thing! The stargazer feature is pretty cool as well.

    Great tent for the price!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great quality tent for the price. Packs down to a relatively small size, and although it is not an ultra lightweight tent it still isn't too heavy to carry on a weekend backpacking trip. Used the tent on a four night camping trip in the White Mountains in New Hampshire and it performed ideally!

    Kelty TN3

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is an awesome tent. I was surprised to see that it came with the gear loft which was a plus. The TN3 has some cool features and packs down somewhat small to fit in your pack. It also has plenty of room for 3 people to fit comfortably plus your gear. For those warm clear nights just keep the rain-fly off and you will have an awesome view of the night sky. For the cold and windy nights just put on the fly and keep the weather out.

    Kelty TraiLogic: TN 3

Stargazing Fly? rolls up for unobstructed views yet clips down for full-coverage protection. Revolutionary snap-clip technology for effortless set-up. Compact pole folding size for easy packing (14" length) Telescopes not required.

    Unanswered Question

What's the best size compression bag to fit tent, rain fly, and footprint?

Would this tent really be comfortable with three people? I have had experiences with some "three person" tents that were extremely tight and uncomfortable.

This is an ultra-light, minimalist tent, which means it will have as little room as possible. If you go for a regular 3-person tent, you will have more room and be more comfortable, with 3 people.

Does this come with a footprint? If not, how much does a footprint cost and how much does it weigh?

Does this tent have any gear loft loops? I like to hang some string lights from the ceiling of my tent so I don't need it to actually have a loft just the loops.

Actually, it does NOT come with a gear loft. There are 2 loops for a gear loft in it though. You would have to purchase Kelty's gear loft that fixes this with two bone teeth attachments for the hoops and then 2 hooks for the other side. Too pricy for me - I just hung 550 paracord.
