Why We Like The HOKA Tecton X 2 Shoe

Groundbreaking trail runners, the Tecton X2 Shoe has been maximized for weight savings and re-engineered with a light, breathable, and inherently hydrophobic Matryx upper that keeps our feet light and dry. This upper enlists a lay-flat gusseted tongue to help mitigate trail debris, while the same parallel carbon fiber plates that made its predecessor a favorite among trail running enthusiasts keep this option as propulsive as ever. Throw in a Vibram MegaGrip outsole and we're ready to rip up the trail mile after mile.

Absolutely phenomenal shoes for the right terrain & runner

These are my absolute favorite shoes for fast efforts on terrain ranging from fire roads to single track to mildly (mildly!) technical trails. They've propelled me to PRs on every segment that falls within the right range of terrain and grade. They're great on all uphill segments, and good on everything but the steepest downhills. I am generally a size 10 or 10.5 depending on the company. More often, a 10 is a good fit. For these shoes, 10.5 was the right choice! It's an absolutely perfect fit, with a little bit of room in the forefoot but a secure lockdown in the midfoot and heel. So if you're between sizes, size up! They're incredible shoes for running fast on buffed trails, and an absolute blast to run in. But a word of warning if you are taking these shoes out on more technical terrain - the propulsion that the carbon plates offers also makes these shoes a little bit dangerous to run in if you aren't laser-focused. It's very possible to step incorrectly on a rock or root, get flung to the side, and sprain an ankle. If you are going to take these out on more technical, rocky ground, stay focused on your every footfall! Or, better yet, save these for the terrain they're best at, and grab some more appropriate shoes for real mountain running.

Third pair of Texton X 2

Third pair of this model. This time on sale (in advance of Tecton X 3 release). They work well for me. The inside liner and cushion of the heel area have worn through in a couple spots, and outer heels of outsole are nearly down to midsole after 200+ miles. 152 lbs, mostly crushed limestone trails. Used for both faster training and racing. In between US 9.5 and 10 for length; generous width in forefoot in US 9.5-I wear thin socks and prefer fit on the snug side so I've gone with 9.5 without issues. The rocker feel is less pronounced now compared to new but they still have some more miles in them if I want to push it.

Lightweight, responsive, and super durable

These are my go-to trail shoes! They are lightweight, providing cushioning and comfort expected from a Hoka, while remaining responsive and quick. I have a pair of Speedgoat 5's, which are also a great shoe, but I feel like the upper holds it form better on the Tecton X 2 while being lighter and more responsive than the Speedgoat. They are super grippy too and never had an issue with lack of confidence on the trails in these.

Tecton X2

I've been using the V1's and love(d) them- I've run through 2.5 pairs so far and have another new pair in my stock pile. These shoes really fit my mid-sized foot well and they've been my favorite road (1/3) to trail (2/3) shoe to date. I tried other Hokas but these feel good on my feet and fast. I'd highly recommend trying before buying if possible. I wear the more worn out ones for backpack trips as well. The V2's- I like them even better, BUT, as people say the toe box is definitely much tighter/more snug, depending on your foot. My toes float in the V1's a little (not problematic and actually preferred for hiking vs. trail runs) but are pretty snug in the V2's. I alternate between the 1's and 2's, and wear toe socks in either if I'm going over 10 miles- although I usually top out at 10 most days. I almost sized up to 11 for the V2's- but it was more an issue of width vs. length so stuck with the 10.5's.

Limited application

This is an early review. I'm finding myself really wanting to love the Tecton x2 but can't find the reasons. Great design, materials, and assembly. But too limited an application for my purposes - running, hiking, scrambling in the Wasatch in the range of 6-12 miles. The front 2/3rd of the upper is so porous that heavy morning dew soaked the shoe and moon dust passes right through, as well. Conversely, it breathes incredibly. I prefer the tighter upper materials in the Mafate and Speedgoat. The mid sole is definitely not plush. Fine by me, because I favor more minimalist trail shoes; I'd rather have feel and precision than cushion. There's lots of dexterity, here, but not much comfort. The megagrip outsole is superb. I can't notice any benefits from the Lite Base, though. Disappointingly, I got substantial foot slippage, despite a snug fit. I'm a lifelong 10.5 size wearer. In these, I couldn't comfortably wear medium thick SmartWool socks. I had to wear ultralight Smartwools. When soaking wet they slid around laterally, despite feeling like there was no room to do so, which undermined my confidence when side-hilling, which happens a lot where I go in the mountains. The Hoka policy permitting/encouraging 30-60 days of use is fantastic. It'll enable me to try the Tectons in varied situations. Presently, it's not the shoe for me. I love the look but not the feel. The Mafate and Speedgoats are far better for my purposes.

Perfect cushion for training/race day

I'm 6'3"/200 lbs and most squishy hokas (clifton) cause me foot issues. The foam in the Tecton X2 is a little firm but still provides good cushion. I do put superfeet green insoles in them, and I think this inhibits the function of the shoe a bit. Side note:the superfeet have eliminated my heel/plantar fasciitis problem. The tecton sole provides good traction on gravel roads (haven't tried them on trails with mud yet). Less traction than speedgoats, but more than Skyline Float X (I use these tanks for running, but mainly hiking). I'll either buy another pair of tectons for my next shoe, or give the Skyward a try.

Tectonic X2

I have the first version and really liked them. Fit was perfect at 10.5. Got the X2 and noticed right away a little narrower in the toe box right away. Spent a week trying to break them in for a 2 week trip in Europe and not much success. They stretched out a little but after 2 miles still have some pain in the forefoot area. Had to leave them home and brought a pair of Bondi's for the trip. Definitely a little narrower than the first version.

(Rolling ankle)

What's up with the rolling ankles??? I have about 40ish miles in them and already rolled my ankle like 7 times. Don't get me wrong I love the fit feet feel amazing just can't understand the rolling ankle situation. Sizing is little under if you ask me (small) width also feels a little narrow HOWEVER it's perfect for me I have a small width foot anyhow.

I so badly want to love this shoe...

I did a lot of reading of reviews prior to purchasing the Tecton X2, because they were more expensive than most running shoes I buy, so I wanted to make sure they were worth my money. There were enough comments about rolled ankles on multiple websites, that I kept reading reviews to make sure this would be the right shoe. Overwhelmingly, most sites dismissed the ankle rolling concerns or those negative reviews were very much the minority opinion. I finally felt comfortable that I bought them. I so badly wanted to love this shoe for all the positive aspects described in most reviews, but ironically enough, I rolled my ankle (badly) a month into wearing them. I've been a regular trail runner for the past eight years, and I've never sprained my ankle. I'd like to think it's coincidence or some tragic irony that this happened, but it's my reality. I'm buying another pair of HOKAs (because I love these shoes), it just won't be the Tecton X2 or any future version of it.
