    Details

    European craftsmanship, waterproof protection.

Handcrafted in Europe, Hanwag premium trekking boots are made with high-quality materials for long-lasting use. The Hanwag Men's Alaska GTX Backpacking Boot features a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane to shed water from passing showers and stream crossings. A waxed nubuck upper and a full rubber rand provide durability against rocks, stumps, and heavy brush. In addition, the rugged Vibram Fourà sole offers reliable grip when you're walking long distances over craggy trails.

This backpacking boot is compatible with strap-on crampons, facilitating general mountaineering and easy travel over snow and glaciers (not suitable for steep ice and harder climbs). Heel shock absorption soaks up vibration for enhanced comfort. An internal harness lock down your heel for full ankle support and blister prevention, and Air Pulse circulation vents this boot through a pumping action at the tongue.

    A Great Go-To Boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 10
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 170lbs

I purchased this boot for my husband a while back and I don't think he's taken it off since! He's worn it for multiple backpacking trips in Colorado and has absolutely loved the fit, comfort and wear. Even on smaller, local hikes, it's his go-to choice. This boot has definitely been a great investment!

    Amazing Backcountry Boot

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'4"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I LOVE these boots. I took them on a 4 day backpacking trip about a week or so after getting them and they were amazing. Held up well, were very comfortable and didn't get any blisters (very important). I have some of Hanwag's other boots and the Alaska is one of my favorites.

Excellent boot with attention to detail

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: US 12
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 225lbs

I’m impressed with these boots as a slightly wider (I have flat feet and this boot fits me great), comfortable, and durable backpacking and hiking boot. I’ve used it in the mountains of norther UT in summer and winter conditions and been thoroughly impressed. Hanwags attention to detail is something they’re clearly proud of and I’ve been happy with all three pair of my Hanwags.

    Great Boot

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 11
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 195lbs

The fit of this boot is a little wide ( however I have really wide feet) - it is very comfortable out of the box, but the more I wore it the better it felt, thus I would recommend that you give this boot some break-in time. It is an awesome trekking boot that I also wear doing work around the property. I would highly recommend this boot.

    Used to be Good quality

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 12
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 250lbs

I've owned a set of these boots for 5 years. Myself and coworkers have put in a ton of walking, hiking and running miles. They've held up great. My work as a peace officer had me pick these up as the dog and swat and search and rescue teams were all using them and really liked the quality.
You'll have to treat the leather with whatever type of oil or conditioner you prefer to use to make sure the leather doesn't crack over time. Order a size down as they run a size large as with UK sizing. Not sure if backcountry has already accounted for this in the US sizing conversion. I bought a 12 and I wear 13.
Break in period does take a while but once broken in very comfy. My sole still has tread left but is starting to wear down. The rubber brim is also coming loose where it meets the leather. When it's cold -15 Celsius or colder (from Canada) the soles get hard and don't grip. They do get cold when it is that cold out but grab a good set of socks and you'll be fine.

I purchased another pair of Hanwags special force boots and they've not held up as good. My friend who is a dog man says they're switching the boot as well as they've noticed the quality of the company waver somewhat.
