Forerunner 55: A Good Basic Watch for Runners

I purchased my Forerunner 55 about a month ago and generally am pleased with its features. I bought it to replace a Forerunner 25, which also a basic watch for runners but over about the five or so years I owned it no longer functioned properly. I considered Garmin's entire suite of watches for runners but found most were much too expensive for what I needed, i.e., a stop watch with GPS to track my distance and time, as well as other basic watch functions such as time and date. The Forerunner 55 was by far the most reasonably priced watch that met my needs. The watch does everything my previous watch did, but of course with technology changes over the last several years, it does it much better. In addition to distance tracking, which appears more accurate, it provides data on my heart rate, respiration, and several other wellness related functions. I have been a runner more than sixty years, and the watch provides everything I want in that regard. My disappointment is in some of the ancillary features. I am also an avid golfer, and the watch has a golf function, but it is practically useless. A friend of mine, who owns an older Garmin watch which was less expensive, has much more extensive golf features including calculating distances to the pin for nearby courses utilizing the GPS built into the watch. I can load local golf courses but the watch doesn't utilize the GPS to calculate pin distances. I suspect the capability could have been enabled in the Forerunner 55 at no additional cost but assume that Garmin chose not to provide it as an incentive to purchase a more expensive Garmin watch. In summary to me the Forerunner 55 is a good watch for runners that is affordably priced but is disappointing in that Garmin did not enable some of the potential features aside from running.

Love this Watch

At 1st I wasn't to sure because I was like it's to much of regular watch, but I fell in love with it because of all the stats it gives and all the watch face options.

Nice watch! Wish it were touchscreen :/

I bought this about a month ago, I was only disappointed in the fact that it was not a touchscreen. The watch and app were also a bit difficult to navigate. I ended up returning it and getting a watch that is touchscreen (COROS)

Frustrating

It is probably because I am too old but found that trying to understand its functions impossible. The instruction book was no help. I had to ask other people to help me, and I now can finally use it at its most basic function. I have the app on my phone but have not as yet tried to tackle that. It seems to function well but honestly; I wished i went with something simpler for a fitness watch. I am 67 years old, and I am training to run 5k races for the first time in my life. My trainer suggested your watch and i went with her advice. I wished i didn't, though maybe all fitness watched are this complicated.

Fitbit to Garmin

I have been a Fitbit girl for years. After my third one messed up I decided to branch out and with lots of recommendations, I caved. I am Obsessed. I love the features and it does way better at tracking than my Fitbit did.

Great basic running and fitness watch

I brought this watch to replace an earlier Garmin Forerunner watch that functioned well, but lacked som additional nice to have features like stress measurement readings, respiration rate and consistent Vo2 metrics. User screens are simple to master after a few days of wear. It's a Great Value and fitness tool!

Great starter Garmin watch

I bought it about a month ago. Thought I would be wearing it during running/workout sessions only, but it gives so much useful statistics like sleep, stress, body battery, etc. that I never take it off. Only to charge which is about once in 10 days. It’s rather affordable and functional. Great starter watch.
