It's not a superhero; it's just you in this warm winter cape.

You don't herd reindeer but you do play outside in wintry weather. The Fjallraven Women's Luhkka Jacket won't let you fly through the air or give you a butler named Alfred Pennyworth, but it will keep you warm whether you wear it alone or over another jacket when the lines on the thermometer don't go low enough.

Instead a traditional jacket design, the Luhkka is actually a cape, but no superpowers are included. Made from G1000 fabric treated with Greenland wax, the outer fabric will resist sprinkles and intrusive gusts of wind, at least from the front. Fjallroven's own Supreme Micro Loft synthetic insulation provides warmth without weight. Supreme Micro Loft is a blend of thin and slightly thicker microfibers coated in silicon. The variety in the microfibers creates pockets of air in the same way down clusters create a matrix of air pockets. Air pockets create an invisible boundary between the cold air outside and the warm air surrounding your body, so the warm air stays where you want it—around you.

Because the Luhkka is a cape, you can wear it as your only jacket, or throw it over a hoodless jacket for an extra layer of warmth. Large kangaroo pockets hold your cell phone and your toddler's toys, and a zippered chest pocket keeps cash and kiddie snacks safe. The Luhkka has a hood with a removable faux fur lining and a half-zip neck, so you can customize the jacket to fit the weather. Buttons at the wrists keep this cape from flapping away with you in it. You can't fly, but you can flap your wings freely and stay warm while wearing the Luhkka.

At a first glance, the Luhkka jacket might not seem like the ideal first choice within Fjallraven's catalog, but after wearing it for some time, the doubt definitely recedes. Super comfortable, stylish, and warm. The size is a bit larger than what you might think, but with this, the baggier the better.

Super Cute And Warm!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My friend had this poncho before me and I loved it! Finally found it in a great burnt orange color.
For Warmth, it's great! I spend a lot of time in the High Rockies during the winter and this is such an easy on and off jacket. I don't recommend wearing a tshirt under it, as it is a poncho, but a thin sweater or such and you're fine. The coldest I've worn it in was -10. I did have a sweater on under because it was -10, and I was toasty.
If you're on the fence, buy it! It's great!

Perfect outdoor addition

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've worn this item throughout the past 6 months and am extremely happy with it. I had an opportunity to try it on before purchase at another outlet, so it didn't have any of the 'surprises' some of the reviews report.

Sizing: This thing runs huge. I opted for the small, but an extra small would have been just fine. I recommend ordering a full size down for most people.

Gusset/Zipper: the front of the cape does not open all the way, and even when opened, it is strictly to enlarge the space for your head/chest. The fabric behind the zipper acts as a wind block. I prefer this design to a zipper that fully opens and exposes you to the cold air/wind, but I understand some people are not a fan of the design.

Warmth: This will not replace your winter coat. In cold temperatures you'll want to layer it over another coat. While the material is strong and durable, the cape itself is not heavily insulated. I like it for sitting around the campfire and adding an extra layer of warmth while I sip my hot cocoa after a long hike. It bolsters the both the warmth and coziness factor in a manner similar to having a blanket wrapped around you.

Storage: A minor detail, but hanging this up in your closet or draping it over your chair at a restaurant isn't ideal. It takes up a lot space. I don't recommend it for urban adventures that will require you to be in close quarters.

Cozy, Warm and Comfortable

I am very pleased. I live in the Yukon, and our winters are cold. I have been wearing the cape overtop of my regular down jacket, and its the perfect temperature. Great for long walks, and the kangaroo pouch is amazing.

This cape is very well-built and high quality. I get comments on it almost every time I wear it, and it is super cozy. Easy to put on and off. I will have this piece for years.

If you`re usually a medium, I recommend buying a small.

Looking forward to wearing in NYC

  • Fit: True to size

The design is more cape than coat, with only snaps at the wrist to close the bottom hem, so there is a lot of draping and air flow. On the body overall the fit is large, but on the shoulders I feel its true to size. I'm very small framed(size 0/26) and bought the XS and am happy with the fit - I feel the draping is flattering and I don't have to worry about a drapey-sleeved sweater bunching up in the sleeves. My most frequent problem in winter is being too hot in the packed subway and too cold walking the waterfront to work. I think this is the perfect solution for me. I can quickly undo the wrist snaps and shift it to let in air when I'm too hot, and when its cold the adjustable-fit hood will definitely keep out the wind and I can add a light down layer underneath. Most importantly it will set me apart from the generic black down puff coat/wool pea coat crowd.

I originally purchased and am returning the olive but its much more dark drab brown-olive than pictured. I saw the red in person and it is a very pretty but bright red. The grey is darker then pictured, a pretty slate, and my ultimate choice.

I wish there were more snaps at the bottom for the option to close it up when its very gusty, handholes from inside the cape, and yes a zipper all the way down the front would make on/off easier but I am still happy with the features the jacket does have.

I love this cape and yes it runs large

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had/have a severely broken upper arm and needed something to wear in cold weather that would not require putting my arm in a sleeve. I was thrilled to find this. Yes, it runs large. No, it does not zip all the way down and is a little awkward to get on and off (especially one-handed). It is a medium weight but you can layer all you want underneath to keep as warm as you need. I like that it has the hood. The kangaroo pockets zip so you won't lose your gloves and there is a smaller zip pocket for your phone. Once I heal, I can imagine wearing this for cross-country skiing or hiking (will I ever get to do these things again?) I like the gusset, so that doesn't bother me. I will say that cat hair clings to the fabric rather badly, so I don't plan on winning any fashion awards. But, this has worked well for what I need right now and I think I will enjoy wearing it forever (I think it will last that long). I hope I will also get to herd reindeer at some point. If so, I'm ready.

too many problems

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

i was unimpressed by this jacket/cape in a number of ways.

1. the zipper doesn't allow you to open the jacket at all, rather, there is a gusset behind the zipper, so it just extends the space you have, but if you're hoping to get a little air, or be able to wear a baby underneath this poncho, it's not going to happen.

2. it was much lighter weight than i had expected, which was disappointing

3. it's HUGE. runs at least a full size large.

sigh. had to send it back.

Fjallraven Luhkka Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I agree with both the reviews below: this poncho is quite large and it is annoying that there is no way to unzip the front. I bought this because I am pregnant and did not want a pregnant specific winter coat. I wanted something that would accommodate me during and after my pregnancy. This is definitely large enough (I am 5'7" and normally wear a medium and got a medium). I like the color and the style, but I am pretty annoyed that the zipper just exposes an extra piece of fabric that makes the head hole wider, it doesn't actually unzip the jacket, so it's always rubbing against your chin.

Gusset doesn't open...

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I wanted to love this....and would have kept it had the gusset under the zipper opened to let in middle aged women.....I sometimes need ventilation at the neck and this does not allow that...I loved it other than back it goes....

***Order ONE FULL SIZE down***

Fjallraven runs ONE FULL SIZE large. A full size. For real. Order one size down.

It's so good!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It's cozy. It's warm. It's like a techy urban blanket with arm access, but doesn't even compare to a snuggie- this is way too technically advanced for sitting on the couch. The G1000 fabric has been around forever. It's a densely woven poly/cotton blend that sheds water without being swishy. This cape is perfect for camping, lumberjacking, urban farming, bike riding, wandering through the forest, or just being a radical urban cape that none of your friends have. Or you can wear it around the office all day, every day.
