Stylish protection.

The Fjallraven Men's Greenland No. 1 Down Jacket has that traditional outdoorsy style we all crave, as well as the protective features you need to actually stay comfy out there. The Greenland owes its heritage-driven style to Fjallraven's G-1000 wax coating that provides reliable protection against water, wind, and abrasion. Fjallraven also sells G-1000 wax bars for reapplication, so you can touch up the elbows, shoulders, and other parts of the jacket as necessary throughout the life of the garment.

Fjallraven stuffed the Greenland with super soft 700-fill down insulation, and the superlight Pertex Quantum lining makes sure you don't feel a feather poking your skin. Made out of recycled polyester and organic cotton, the Greenland is an eco-friendly choice for year-round use.

Chest pocket fail

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large
  • Height: 6'5"
  • Weight: 205lbs

I love this jacket construction--the leather details around cuffs and hood are classy and strong, this coat was built to last by smart people with skill, and a large fits a large fit person, not a large fat person. That's all amazing.
I returned it because the double chest pockets just reminded me of wearing a Carhartt jacket. The two snaps right on the chest didn't do it for me. It's a shame because I appreciate how these people make gear that fits taller thinner people. Most clothing companies have forgotten we still exist in America. I'll keep buying whatever these guys make. They have fit and quality figured out.

Best jacket I've ever owned!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL
  • Height: 6'0"
  • Weight: 230lbs

I got this to take hunting, motorcycling, camping, fishing and just for wearing around because it is a great looking and fitting coat. I love the simplicity of it. Some jackets have a hundred zippers with vents and pockets (which can be nice) but this jacket is more user friendly and will keep you very warm and comfortable. It has kept me nice and warm riding around on my motorcycle on dry days here in Utah. I haven't taken it on the freeway yet but the hood wasn't an issue when riding around town (thought it might whip around).

Ended My Search...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium
  • Height: 5'9"
  • Weight: 155lbs

After reading dozens of reviews on multiple coats, I realized I wasn't the only one searching for the perfect winter coat. This was one of the first coats that I ordered, but I went thru several Arcteryx and Marmot coats before selecting this one. I circled back to this one because ultimately it was visibly the highest quality product that I tried. Here's why I liked it:
1. Outer material is a high quality poly/cotton that is easy to wax. I used the greenland wax and the color of the material didn't change at all.
2. Zipper is easy to use. Believe it or not, many of the other pricey coats had zippers that just didn't work well, which I don't understand.
3. Deep chest pockets and a nice interior pocket for phones, wallets etc.
4. Long arms. The arms are just slightly long for me, but I like that. I prefer that design because i don't like it when cuffs come up the arms when they are stretched.
5. The coat has a trim cut style. It's not puffy.
6. Good coat length. Not to long or short.
7. It's not overly warm, which is ok with me. I prefer to layer.
Here's some cons that I ultimately accepted:
1. Pricey.
2. Hood is not removable.
3. Hood and waist cannot be cinched.
4. Hand pocket could be a little deeper for me, and I prefer pockets that can be zipped vs. snapped closed.
5. I'm not a fan of logos...I wish it wasn't on the sleeve.
Overall, great jacket. I decided to splurge because I will have it forever. And, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the great service from Zach!

Really high quality coat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

Didn't want to wear what everyone else is wearing (Canada Goose), so I researched coats and settled on this one. Happy I did. It's not too puffy and looks great in an urban environment. I even got my own wax and treated it myself after washing it. However, it is really not a winter coat. More like a chilly fall day. I would recommend getting a size that allows you to wear a layer underneath. That was my mistake. Good thing I have a variety of layers in various thicknesses to make it work. Nevertheless I am happy with this coat. Would only recommend it too someone who is willing to maintain the coat with its wax treatment.

Great Quality Warm functional coat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large
  • Height: 6'2"
  • Weight: 180lbs

180 lbs
42" long suit jacket

I bought a large and probably have 4" of room to grow. Arm length great. Super quality. Been out in low teens with 21 mph wind and felt like I was in a sleeping bag.

Coat is killer. Heats up fast. Total arm freedom moving around. Hood fits snug not floppy.

Lulea Tested

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I purchased this jacket while living in Lulea, Sweden on study abroad. (less than 150km from the Arctic Circle) This was my daily wear jacket from mid/late fall through to the dead of winter. The jacket is absolutely outstanding in it's quality!!! The down interior is thin yet warm enough with just a t-shirt whenever I was doing any hiking or biking; however, if I was just walking around town or to class I'd need to wear a light flannel or sweater underneath. The style of this jacket is absolutely incredible though and you can tell as soon as it's in your hands that it is of an outstanding quality. This is a jacket I'll be wearing for a very, very long time.

P.S. When i was buying the jacket in the store an older guy came in to buy more of the Greenland wax for his old Fjallraven jacket which looked like it was possibly a year old and he said he'd been wearing it every winter for the past 35 years. So, yea he helped sell me on spending the money on this, yes expensive, yet lifelong quality jacket.

The Greenland Down No. 1 is an excellent coat so long as you know what you are buying it for. Trying to stay warm with a single layer in single digits? Nope. Stuff it in a pack for 6k vertical day? Bad idea. Cut firewood and look good at the bar after? Now you’re talking.
Getting down to the nitty gritty, the detail and workmanship on the jacket are beautiful. Quality leather that will soften over time, soft lining, attention to detail in things like bartacks and under arm articulation. It’s a jacket that will survive things that would destroy most other insulated jackets and the wear and tear will give it some additional character.
While other websites have said it is oversized, the size large fit is spot on for me at 5’11” 200 lbs athletic build. It’s not as trim as Arcteryx (but close) and not as boxy as Patagonia. I’d say the down insulation is less than you’d find in a down sweater and is probably in the range of being 60-80 grams if it were synthetic. That said, the jacket has a sturdy outer which I imagine adds more warmth than a lightweight shell fabric and the water-shedding capability is excellent. It’s a great rough and tumble mountainy jacket, that succeeds in the looks category more-so than any other. It's been my daily jacket for a month of two now and it's been great.

On fjallravens own website this jacket is advertised as being "lightly filled" with down. I can tell just by looking at pictures that the baffles inside the jacket are not very puffy but somewhat flat indicating not very much filling. That being said this jacket gets downright hot with properly added layers underneath. Nowhere is it advertised as a stand alone jacket for 0 degree weather. If you want better water resistance i would wear a cheap shell over it. I would however agree the price is a bit high but with the tough g1000 and reinforced shoulders and elbows this garment should last quite a while even with a medium to hard wear. Love this jacket.

NOT a highly insulated jacket

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket looks great but was not nearly as insulated as we expected it to be based on the product description. Definitely not intended to be a winter coat in the midwest. It reminds me of the fabric of a Carhartt jacket (which I like) but it has a thin down lining. If you live in the southern half of the U.S. or plan to use it as a (very expensive) fall jacket, this may be for you. Price point quite high for the level of insulation.

I agree with your review. This is an expensive fall jacket. I purchased it because it looks so damn good. So, I will be using it in the fall and later as a shell with a light down jacket underneath to extend it's usefulness throughout the winter.

I live in Colorado, and for an around town piece, even in the mountains, I find it to be warm enough... if it's SUPER cold I'll either throw a sweater on underneath it... or pull a different heavier jacket ...

I have big problems picking my size on this jacket. Can please someone help me out with trying this jacket or similar.
For reference I can tell you that below product i own i have M size for it:
-atom lt hoody from arcteryx in size M
- gamma lt hoody in size M
- usually wear size 31/32 for pants

I am 181cm, 75kg. Quite narrow body. If i am not wrong around 93cm around widest part of chests.

Thanks for tip and help!

I would stick with the Medium then, fits right in with your chest size. It wont fit as slim/tight as the Atom LT or Gamma LT as it has a more relaxed fit.
