For cold, rough open-water swims pick a neoprene wetsuit that provides buoyancy and thermal protection while allowing full arm rotation. Aim for a snug, second-skin fit so the suit stays hydrodynamic without restricting breathing or stroke mobility.

A compressive, second-skin fit in a one- or two-piece tri suit reduces drag and speeds transitions by drying fast and staying close to the body. Look for fast-drying blends that combine jersey and short fabrics to balance breathability and coverage during bike and run legs.

Tri-bikes use a forward geometry to put you in a more aerodynamic position for higher speed, but that can reduce low-speed maneuverability and comfort on longer rides. High-end examples like the Canyon Speedmax CF SLX 9.0 LTD illustrate this trade-off, with an adjustable Ergon cockpit and Zipp 858 NSW wheels to fine-tune fit and aerodynamics.

Cycling shoes should fit snugly with a stiff sole to maximize power transfer and precise cleat placement for efficient pedaling on clipless systems. Try shoes with the socks you’ll race in and confirm the fit is firm at the heel but not painfully tight across the forefoot.

Look for a watch with robust GPS tracking, multisport modes, and durable construction so it handles open-water swims, bikes, and runs; the Garmin Epix Pro Sapphire is an example with a 1.4-inch AMOLED display and military-tested ruggedness for detailed training metrics. Also prioritize battery life and heart-rate compatibility so you can monitor effort across all legs.
