For ultralight trips, closed-cell foam pads are the go-to choice because they’re extremely reliable and weigh around 14 oz, like the Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol. They’re simple to use and durable for thru-hiking in mild conditions, though they offer less insulation than down-filled models.
If you'll be in cold conditions, look for insulated inflatables with R-values in the 3–5 range for three-season use or 5–7+ for four-season, and check for ASTM F3340-18 R-value certification. Models like the Nemo Tensor All-Season Ultralight Insulated (R-value 5.4, 16 oz) balance warmth and packability for cold backpacking.
Match pad length to your torso height—regular pads are about 72 inches and long options go to 78 inches—then choose a wider pad if you roll, with common widths from 20–25 inches. Side sleepers should aim for at least 3–4 inches of thickness to get proper hip and shoulder support.
Many ultralight inflatables pack down to about a 1‑liter bottle volume and can weigh as little as 12 oz, as with the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite. Keep in mind that the smallest, lightest pads often trade off some insulation and ruggedness, so balance weight with season needs.
