Type I is meant for open ocean, rough seas, or remote waters with delayed rescue and offers over 22 lbs of buoyancy to help turn an unconscious user face-up. For near-shore recreation like kayaking or boating in calm conditions, a Type III (around 15.5–16.5 lbs flotation) such as the O'Neill Outlaw Vest is a common choice for mobility and comfort.

Inflatables give a very slim profile when uninflated and can be great for paddling, but they rely on manual or automatic inflation rather than inherent buoyancy. Closed-cell foam designs—like the GAIA PVC-free foam in the NRS Aries, which provides 16.5 lbs of flotation—offer continuous buoyancy and don’t require activation.

A PFD should fit snugly without restricting motion, using adjustment points such as four side straps and two shoulder straps to dial in the fit. Look for low-profile cuts and floating front panels that conform to your torso, and materials like GAIA foam and a 500-denier Cordura shell for seated comfort.

Type V PFDs are intended for specific activities—whitewater rafting, boardsailing, or windsurfing—and must be worn continuously for the labeled use to meet safety requirements. These special-use models are often skeletonized for mobility and may use thin vertical shoulder straps or air-filled chambers to provide the needed buoyancy and freedom of movement.

Type IV throwables, like cushions and ring buoys, are non-wearable devices kept on board to assist in a person-overboard emergency and are meant for quick deployment. Keep a Type IV stowed in an easily reachable, visible spot on deck so it can be grabbed and thrown immediately when needed; commercial operations may use SOLAS-rated throwables.
