Green Paddle Safety Gear

Match chest size and weight capacity so the PFD provides buoyancy without restricting movement; Type III vests work well for general paddling while Type V is required or recommended for some vessels. For cold water consider REI-recommended foam or auto-inflating CO2 options that add insulation.

Use a coiled leash for calm flatwater and a straight cord for surf. Quick-release styles, like those from Palm Equipment, are the safest choice for whitewater to avoid entanglement, and you should size the leash to your ankle and board.

Inflatable paddle floats generally provide more lift for larger paddlers, while closed-cell foam floats are non-absorbent and rugged. Verify the float matches your paddle’s blade sleeve and shaft strap, and consider urethane-coated nylon inflatables if you need extra flotation.

Save a spray skirt for rainy, wavy, or drizzly trips where keeping water out of the cockpit matters. It should seal at your waist to the cockpit coaming and is typically made from waterproof neoprene or nylon for a snug, watertight fit.

For low-visibility offshore or tidal trips choose lights with an IP68 waterproof rating like the Guardian Angel LED for 360-degree illumination and multiple modes. Pair those with whitewater essentials—Palm helmets, throw-lines, knives, and rescue aids such as stirrups or sponsons—to stay prepared.
