Nymphs for Fly Fishing

Match your fly to the local insects and water: bigger patterns in the 8–12 range imitate stoneflies and caddis, while tiny 18–24 sizes mimic midges in slow water. Most packs come with 12 flies, so bring a couple sizes to test what the fish prefer.

Classic nymphs use natural furs like hare's ear and a buggy profile to produce a lifelike drift, whereas Euro nymphs have slim bodies and tungsten beads for faster sinking and precise depth control. Models like the Umpqua Black Beauty show classic appeal, while Euro-style patterns focus on weight and a tight profile for current.

Emergers are best when you see surface activity during a mayfly hatch, since patterns like hare's ear emerger or Bars emerger imitate insects stuck in the film. If fish are feeding deeper or holding in current, switch to subsurface nymphs that match the hatch.

Tungsten beads add concentrated weight so flies sink quickly; heavy options like the Montana Fly Company Duracell Bomb drive the fly down fast in riffles and deep seams. Pair bead weight with the appropriate fly size so the pattern still drifts naturally through current.

Still water often calls for scuds, leeches, and egg patterns that scavenging fish eat—Mayer's Mini Leech and egg imitations are good choices in lakes and ponds. In fast rivers, classic and Euro nymphs with buggy profiles or tungsten beads better imitate drifting mayflies and stoneflies.
