Girls' Gray Hiking Shoes

Mid-height boots like the Terrex AX4R give ankle support and stability on rocky or technical trails, making them well-suited for longer backpacking trips. Trail runners sacrifice some protection for speed and agility, so older kids doing faster-paced day hikes on well-maintained trails will often prefer them.

Waterproof models are best when you expect wet weather or stream crossings because they use protective membranes or treated uppers to shed moisture while maintaining breathability. Breathable, non-waterproof shoes stay lighter and more flexible, which helps on dry trails and faster outings.

Sizing can vary widely between brands, so try shoes on with the socks your child will wear and have them walk on an incline if possible. Many lines cover a broad range; some models start at size 11 and go down to size 7 to fit older kids and teens.

Durability often comes from reinforced toe caps, quality stitching, and a grippy rubber outsole, while breathable membranes or treated uppers add weather resistance. The Merrell Moab FST Mid pairs mid-height support with flexible construction to help maintain natural foot movement on longer outings.

Sandals like the KEEN Newport H2 work well for creek crossings and warm-weather hikes thanks to bungie laces, Velcro straps, and a protective toe bumper. Shoes or sandals with quick-drying materials and secure closures make post-crossing comfort and fit easier to manage on short outings.
