For day hikes aim for 20–35 liters, weekends usually need 30–50 liters, and multiday trips commonly call for 50–75 liters; expedition packs exceed 75 liters to carry winter or mountaineering gear. Brands like Osprey offer multiple capacities and adjustable torso systems to match those trip types.

Measure your torso and try packs on to ensure the hip belt sits on your hip bones rather than your lower back. It should transfer roughly 80–90 percent of the pack's weight, so look for substantial hip-belt padding and adjustable torso lengths for a stable fit.

Water-resistant fabrics like Dyneema provide extra protection against rain and snow and are especially valuable for winter or alpine trips. Also consider build quality and a robust suspension so wet, heavy loads remain stable on long carries.

Top-loading packs are simple and often lighter for long trail days, while front-panel or suitcase-style access makes organizing gear and reaching a sleeping bag much easier. If you want quick day access on multiday trips, look for removable lids that convert to daypacks or explicit sleeping-bag compartments; Osprey models often offer both options.

Ultralight backpacks typically aim for roughly 10–30 pounds, standard packs commonly fall in the 20–40 pound range, and expedition packs are generally 40 pounds and up to accommodate heavier systems. Match the weight category to trip length and features you need, like ice-axe loops, extra insulation, or larger food and fuel capacity.
