Black Avalanche Beacons

For beginners in moderate terrain, a basic digital model with a simple interface and three-antenna design is a good starting point because it’s easier to learn. If you ride steep or technical lines, step up to advanced three-antenna or hybrid units like the Mammut Barryvox S, which is built for fast multiple-victim searches and offers a 70 m range.

Alkaline and lithium cells are common, and run times vary widely—expect roughly 200–600 hours in search mode depending on the model. For example, the Pieps Pro BT lists about 400 hours with alkaline and 600 hours with lithium, while the Barryvox S advertises around 300 hours on alkaline.

You can; most beacons have a slim profile around 115–118 mm long and 26–29 mm thick so they sit flat under a jacket without too much bulk. Focus on harness compatibility and an ergonomic grip—lightweight designs like the Black Diamond Recon LT at 136 g make on-the-fly access and handling easier.

Durability is built into most models with ABS or polycarbonate housings, IP67 or better waterproofing, and drop-tested construction often up to about 3 meters. Those features help ensure the three internal antennas and electronics keep working after impacts or wet-snow exposure.

Advanced units include multiple-burial flagging, transceiver-to-transceiver marking, voice guidance, and group-check functions to speed complex rescues. Pro hybrids and high-end digitals can handle 4+ victims and many offer app connectivity for updates—Pieps Pro BT and the Barryvox S are examples geared toward those scenarios.
