Why We Like The Storm 500-R Headlamp
Black Diamond is enhancing its Storm headlamp lineup with the new R-Series lamps. This particular Storm 500-R Headlamp is a high-lumen and multi-mode lamp that gives us the power to fully illuminate our nights with nine different lighting modes and the potential for 5H of charge time at the highest setting. We really like that the Repreve headband stops that uncomfortable, hair-pulling sensation we often get with cheaper headlamps.

Half Dome Sunrise hike
Head lamp worked great for our hike that started at 1:30am. Battery lasted entirely until sunrise, and then some. Plastic piece on back of light is slightly uncomfortable on my forehead, I tried wearing it over a hat, then ended up just wrapping it around my hand for light.

Great for desert hiking
I have been using this for dessert hiking. I want to limit light pollution at night so the red light feature is great. The reachable battery is long lasting, and the lamp is durable. It's everything I was looking for.

Excellent high Luman light!
Great light for activities requiring extra lighting - backcountry skiing, trail running, etc. Great battery life for a rechargeable headlamp as well.

Confusing brightness options
I use this headlamp for offshore sailing and having the brightness spike out of the blue is really frustrating and a little dangerous. The lamp goes from dimmed to full brightness on its own. I am well versed on the instructions but it still seems to have a mind of its own. I have actually down graded to a lower cost unit which does not have this issue. Also the mini UBS is a drag.

Great features, bad quality
I would love the headlamp with all of its features if it weren't for two extremely annoying issues I've encountered in the past 1 year of usage: 1 - Spotlight failure. I've had to request a replacement because my first headlamp spotlight would sporadically fail only after about 1 week of usage. I narrowed it down to some internal circuitry problem as tapping the bottom of the headlight could trigger the issue. The replacement still has the same issue but it is a lot harder to reproduce and it occurs manageably rarely during everyday use (e.g. cycling) but is nonetheless annoying for such a price tag. 2 - Just today the small plastic which is responsible for keeping the adjusted angle of the lamp cracked, making the direction non-adjustable (since it plops down without resistance). To my knowledge, I haven't subjected the lamp to any extreme forces. Overall would be a very nice, powerful, heavy-duty and feature-packed headlamp if it weren't for the above flaws. I honestly wouldn't recommend it based on my experience.

Multiple Uses
This headlamp has so many features. The variable adjusting main lamp. The red lamp. I find in useful for hiking, hunting and cleaning up dog poop while walking the dog. The head band is strong and easy to adjust.
