Why We Like The First Light Stretch Hooded Jacket

Out of Black Diamond's massive collection of insulated jackets, the Men's First Light Stretch Hooded Jacket is by far the most breathable insulators. Fit for alpine climbs, backcountry tours, and moving fast in cold mountains, its Primaloft Silver Active insulation is performance-ready to keep warm when we're working up a sweat. Black Diamond designed the insulation in Schoeller softshell fabric for active-inspired stretch and water-resistance that sheds snowflakes and light moisture. The jacket's regular fit includes underarm gussets to ensure freedom of movement on the mountain, and there are adjustments at the hem and climbing helmet-compatible hood for a snug fit.

I absolutely love the fit and color (red/black). It's trim, but not restrictive and has quite a bit of stretch. As much as I wanted to keep it, I did end up returning it because whenever I put it on, I noticed the lining got pushed out of the cuffs. It's small and seemingly insignificant, but it drove me nuts and would have bothered me if I had to stuff it back in the sleeves every time I put it on. I'm guessing it's because the lining isn't quite as slick as my Atom or other BD jacket.

First impressions were that this was way more LIGHT and not as insulating as I expected it to be. It is definitely one of my lightest insulating jackets and packs down relatively small, not bulky at all. However... man I love this jacket! Even though is lightweight, it keeps me warm! I really wanted to test its insulation/breathability so I went out mountain biking with it, with just one long sleeve thin dri-fit shirt underneath. It was night, 35F-40F temps out, and the jacket was doing its work by keeping me warm. Once running and my body heated up... this jacket performed flawlessly. Never felt suffocated, or extra warm, or damp inside or anything. It cuts through the wind really well too! I am 5'10, 140lbs, ordered a size SMALL... and this fits on the slim side. Will not be able to layer down much in this one, but I think it will not be necessary. This was one good investment. Cheers Black Diamond!

Bought as a gift, but have feedback to share. Although I haven't had a whole season to test the jacket, I have been impressed with the time I have had it. My biggest test was wearing it while snowshoeing into a yurt while pulling a sled. It was a warm day, probably ~45° F and I was pulling a fair amount of weight, mostly up hill. It did a great job breathing and I didn't over heat. I am sold. True to size, or just a tad large.

My old favorite insulated jacket was the old version of this First Light, which I've had for a few years and loved. What I loved about it was how this fancy schoeller fabric on the outside, while not being water PROOF by any means, is so much more water-repellent than the fabric typically used on other jackets in this category. This is a game changer while touring in snowy weather, but also just around town if I get caught in some rain/snow. Aside from that, the overall fit an feel was just great. It feels much softer/more supply than the crunch/shiny fabrics used in competitors as well. The one issue I had was that it was definitely a pretty slim "athletic" fit, and combined with the fact that it did not stretch at all, it did hinder freedom of movement a little bit especially if I wore anything thick under it. Enter this new Stretch version. Same great jacket with all the fabrics/features I loved, but with a slightly roomier fit for layering underneath and a good bit of stretch for more mobility. If you are in the market for an all-around synthetic insulation jacket I would highly recommend this. Only drawback vs. some of the competition would be that it is not terribly light weight or compressible, so if you are backpacking or doing something that requires extreme pack-abilty and weight savings it might not be the one for you. For normal travel I find it plenty pack-able for how I pack. I'm 6' 195lbs and wear either Large or XL depending on the brand/fit. I wore the old version in Large and it fit, but as mentioned was not a super forgiving fit. I got this in Large and it is also perfect, tiny bit more room for layering, but still a nice trim look not too baggy/boxy.

PS: Forgot to mention one of the biggest benefits since it remains the same form the first version, but this is also a very "breathable" insulation piece. That is of course all relative, it's insulated and you're gonna sweat when you get hot... but it manages temps way better while hiking than a taffeta lined mid-layer. On par with jackets like the Nano Air and Proton which our other great contenders in this category.

Is there insulation in the sleeves for this hoody? Or just the torso?

Yes, the same Primaloft Silver Active insulation is used throughout the sleeves as well as the torso. If you have any other questions or need assistance with an existing order or placing an order, please feel free to contact us on Chat or call us at 1-800-409-4502. Thanks!
