Why We Like The Black Diamond Distance 4L Hydration Vest

Generation two of Black Diamond's Distance 4L Hydration Vest takes us even further, thanks to the new stretchy and supportive construction. The running harness-style suspension system stretches from the sides across the back panel to offer comfort during training sessions, races, and fast-paced hikes. The stretch side panels provide a secure fit, and the integrated trekking pole carry loops keep Black Diamond Z-Poles fastened across our back to free our hands for scrambling. Front pockets stash the included soft flasks for on-the-go hydration, the pass-through lumbar pocket provides storage for an extra layer, and an abundance of other stretch and zippered pockets keep all our on-trail essentials within reach.

great for longer runs

using a vest is much better than holding a water bottle or using a hip back.

In it's own class

I spend a lot of time on the trails of Utah. Early early mornings, afternoon, etc. I've tried every brand of running vests out there and kept coming back to the Distance 4. The fit and the storage system is so well thought out and just what I need that I've stopped searching for others...in fact, I just ordered by 3rd Distance 4 for this year's running season. The other 2 have served well for years and they are now retired. From one trail runner to another....look no further!

Great Running Vest!

Highly recommend the Distance 4. I would recommend sizing down if you're between sizes. I had a large, but changed to a medium size (I wear a Large in almost any shirt/top). The large fit well "dry" but once the bottles were loaded and bouncing, I immediately wished I'd sized down. Otherwise, great product, lots of stretch to the pockets for stashing all of the parts and pieces I end up wearing/eating.

THE BEST VEST!

Great fit on this vest with lots of little compartments to keep all your gear tucked away. Best feature? The On-the-go Z-Pole storage. Brilliant!

Pushing the Culmination Point

Can't get over how much space for food and water this pack provides! Ample pockets and features to sustain your endurance feats and stave off the bonk. Also, design fits super snug to the body to reduce bounce during runs. 165lbs, 5'10" - purchased a Medium.

First Vest

First time wearing a vest, I loved all the storage, and it's easy easier to get water compared to sticking through a hose on a normal hydration pack.

Trail Runner

This was my third purchase of the Distance 4 hydration vest, my last one was being held together by safety pins. I purchased a M's size medium based on the sizing guide but should have gotten a small as the medium was bouncing on me as I ran (especially after getting tired). I am a 5' 6" female with a torso circumference of 34" so Medium made sense, and I didn't know it wasn't the correct size till I was ~10 miles into my long run so can't return the used pack, I am considering investing in the Small so I can use the Medium when the weather gets colder and I am wearing more layers under the pack. In the newer model the water bottles are positioned higher (which is really nice) and it seems to come with skinnier water bottles compared to my older ones. The pack comes with 500ml capacity soft water bottles on each side x2, which has been GREAT for races with AS's every 5-10 miles, when I am not racing or doing supported efforts I am able to carry a filter easily in the small back pocket... or since it is summer and creeks are drying up I can fit a and carry an additional 1.5L bladder in the back large pocket. Overall I am happy with the pack and like the newer bigger pockets, kind of bummed there is now only one zipper pocket but it is twice as big as the older ones were. Pretty bummed I didn't get the smaller size which is why this is a 3 star review and not a 5.

Great for everything except on bare skin

Love this vest. Looking forward to trying out the pole carrying system ASAP but so far I'm a big fan of all the features. The vest fits very similarly to Salomon's vests in that it really feels like an extension of the runner rather than a backpack. I wore this on one training run before wearing it for a 50k and throughout both runs I hardly knew it was there. Chest pockets aren't too cumbersome and the bungees that keep the SoftFlasks in place are money. The back lower pocket is accessible on the fly making it perfect for a rain or extra layer. There's another compartment on the back that's enclosed by a zipper which I found perfect for stashing extra gels I wasn't sure I would need. This little pocket is perfect for storing all the things that may not get used during a typical run. This vest IS also reservoir compatible and I really didn't notice much sloshing around throughout the run. What it doesn't have is a dedicated slot on the top of the shoulder strap to run the reservoir tube through, but this really wasn't an issue at all as it does have a little loop you can thread the tube through right above the chest pocket. The ONLY thing I didn't like about this vest is the material that's being used on the inside. On my training run, I had a singlet and noticed that it was rubbing on my back and shoulders a bit. I ran the last 10 mins without a shirt and definitely began to chafe. I ran in a t-shirt during the 50k instead of a singlet because of this and had zero issues with chaffing. This was something I didn't like about Salomon's Adv Skin 12 vest and the Distance 4 Hydration Vest seems to be the same. The material that Nathan uses for their hydration vests seems to be the most friendly on bare skin, but the Distance 4 Hydration Vest fits so much nicer. I really didn't notice I was wearing a vest throughout the 50k until I needed something from it. I would for sure give this vest 5 stars if it didn't chafe on bare skin.
