    Get a move on.

Going light is good, but going naked is bad, so split the difference with the Black Diamond Alpine Start Women's Hooded Jacket. At under seven ounces, it doesn't weigh much more than nothing, but it offers the wind-blocking protection of Schoeller softshell fabric, so you don't have to expose any bare skin to the elements when you're hitting the skin track or starting the approach at 4 a.m. The fabric sports a NanoSphere coating that repels water, dirt, and oil so you can move through showers and avoid disastrous dinner spills, and the underarms rock climbing-specific gussets allow you to make those big moves without having to de-layer. Needless to say, the low-profile hood is designed to work with helmets, the elastic cuffs and drawcord hem keep drafts out, and the self-stowing internal pocket easily stashes your jacket and clips to your harness for easy access when you're lining up a ten pitcher.

    Do-it-all Layer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

This jacket is my second skin when I'm climbing, I never leave the ground without it. Packs down just as small as the Patagonia Hoodini, and the material is insanely comfortable/breathable. Highly Recommend.

    Do-it-all Layer

    Surprised! :)

Love carrying a lightweight jacket in my pack that'll both keep my warm and block the wind on those days when that cold wind blows. This jacket performed very well blocking the wind on mountain tops. The material has give so there's no limit to range of motion. I had read mixed reviews of the water-resistance throughout the net prior to purchase but still ordered because I do carry a rain jacket. I left the Alpine Start on when the wind blew and the rain started to fall. At this point, the rain was moderate and steady. I kept checking my hair under hood and my Garmin watch to see if any moisture was getting through the jacket and everything was dry. Hiked through this rain with this jacket on for maybe 60-90 minutes before switching into my rain jacket. I didn't switch because I was getting wet though, only did because the rain picked up and I wasn't sure this would hold up in heavy rain.
Other things to note... Love that the chest pocket is on the inside... the color is great, pretty and bright... fit is flattering (true to size)...material is soft and stretchy

Loved it so I bought one for her

I bought one of these to replace a favorite lightweight shell. I've been so happy with it I bought one for my sweetheart for Valentine's Day. She loves hers too! It is a pseudo stretchy, very lightweight shell that packs down to nothing. It's warm enough for a hike, xc ski or for walking the dog and it packs down to nothing. It's not going to keep you dry in a downpour or protect you during a blizzard but that's not what it's designed for. It does however excel as an outer shell over your puffy to stay dry in a snow squall, as a wind stopper or just for some extra warmth. Worn over a base layer or two it's just right for exerting yourself.

    Nifty wind jacket

When this first arrived and I opened the package I was astounded by how light the jacket was, however after taking it out for a test climb I was pleasantly surprised by how well it fit, and cut the wind enough to keep me from chilling when waiting for a belay. The helmet compatible hood fit well over my helmet, so all in all I like it very much. As it was on sale there was only the coral color, so it may not stay clean long but it is a funky color, I shant be blending into the mountainside any time soon! It is too bad there aren't any pockets to stuff gloves into however you can always put them inside they won't fall out with your harness securing the bottom end of the jacket. Definitely a summer jacket.

    Unanswered Question

Not sure this is a question. This jacket is on the way. I am going to compare it to the Dynafit Trail DTS. I am a pocket fiend and very disappointed that Black Diamond thought to include an external chest pocket on the mens version but not the womens. Hoping this won't be an issue with the internal pocket but when it's cold or raining one does not want to unzip to get to the pocket. Fail :-(
