The Black Diamond Alpine Start Hooded Jacket helps us keep wind and light rain at arm's length. We slip it on when the gusts come out to play, and the climbing-specific gussets keep our arms moving freely even as its nylon face blocks the wind.
The Schoeller softshell fabric is highly breathable, so you can hike fast and climb hard, and the jacket is treated with Nanosphere technology, making the stretch fabric resistant to both moisture and dirt. Weighing even less than before, it can be easily stowed into its own pocket when the sun comes out, letting you clip it to your harness or stuff it into a pack.

Never Climb Without It

I LOVE this jacket - From Spring - Fall, this piece is always are on me or in my pack for all my adventures. It's incredibly lightweight at sub-8oz, so I don't even notice it's addition. There's definitely more of a "wind-shell" feel, but it holds up in light rain and even some light snow that I've experienced. It also breathes surprisingly well during high-output climbing or mountaineering. My only "complaint" is sizing. On the 2022 version (which I own), there's a weird tendency for the fabric to bunch in the waist and stick out if I'm sitting. It's not a deal breaker by any stretch, just odd, since it fits great when I'm standing and it's not particularly tight. I'm a M in just about everything Black Diamond (I'm 32'' waist, 38'' chest), and I found the Medium definitely has a more athletic cut similar to other mountaineering clothing. It's possible that the 2023 version fixed this - but definitely recommend trying it on to see what size works.

Great Jacket, not so great support

Bought the jacket for over a year now and like it's utility. But some of the threading started to wear on the front of the jacket. Usually with premium brands and products, the company would take care of my issue, but after writing to them, they basically told me that it's considered wear and tear and that they won't be able to do anything. I use the jacket maybe less than 20 times a year in sunny California. With other brands like Patagonia or Osprey, I can just write to them to let them know when issues come up and they are happy to work with me. I would say that while the jacket may work well, the support afterwards does not exist. I've made a note to not support this brand in the future since they don't support their customers.

Have worn for running several times in light to moderate rain, 35 - 40 degrees, 5-10 wind. Underneath I wore a light baselayer or a base and a poly midlayer. Water resistance is good - it wets though in spots, mainly by the wrists and upper back but I stay dry underneath. Wind resistance/warmth has been fine. Breathability has been great. Material is soft and very quiet. It has some stretch too. The hood is great - not too tight or loose and turns easily with your head. I'm 5-11, 31 in waist and 35 in chest and a Medium fits well.

The fabric is great, lightweight, super-breathable, comfortable over a wide range of temps w/o condensation, blocks wind. I've used it alpine climbing, biking, and running. Cut isn't great for me; I'd like a layer like this to be relatively snug w/o constricting when worn over base layers. The fabric is light enough that if loose it flaps in the wind. Medium fit in most places but was too tight under the armpits. Large solved that, but there's quite a bit of extra fabric elsewhere. Wrists aren't snug to wrist. For the price and simplicity of this garment I'd like some way of restraining the hood in the wind, better cut, and better wrist cinching.

The best lightweight soft shell out there. Feels more like a windshirt than a softshell but it's really breathable. Used in some light rain and it beaded up nicely. Did amazing in the wind. I'll be bringing this with me everywhere hiking/climbing. Fits pretty nicely its just long enough for me in the torso and arms. The only negative would be that the fabric bunches up in the lower chest area and sticks out if I'm seated or if I'm not standing up straight. Not as bad with a pack on, a little annoying but not a big deal. I love this jacket
