Why We Built The Backcountry MTN Air EVOLVE Hooded Jacket

Winter-ready revisions make our Backcountry MTN Air EVOLVE Hooded Jacket the ideal midlayer for cold-weather mountain pursuits. We added Primaloft's EVOLVE liner for eco-conscious insulation that stands up to the storm and lets air permeate, allowing comfort on high-output adventures. The jacket's athletic fit and two-way stretch composition allow us to be active in our climbs, treks, and tours, and the fixed hood provides coverage against the winds we face in the alpine winter.

Breathable and air permeable, but warm sums up the MTN Air Evolve hooded jacket. The jacket nearly checks off everything I wanted: I basically wanted a warm, breathable and lightweight hoody for high exercsion activities like the TNF L2 Futurefleece or a Polartec Alpha Direct with a more durable face fabric (to better resist snagging on branches and abrasion) and DWR, but not as heavy as Patagonia R1 Techface (which isn't very warm and is heavy). I wear Large in most brands, and bought a Large which fit well with room. Even though the sizing chart has me on the larger chest end of Large, I can still wear a thermal base layer without being tight or restrictive and without looking like a sausage. I like the hand warmer pockets go under the insulation so they are actually hand warming pockets. I wish Primaloft made a 40gsm Active Evolve for those of us who run warm, which could have made this jacket more to my target wish weight of around 7-8oz. I dislike that Backcountry did not specify that the whole length of the under arm to the arm pit to a little down the side is only shell fabric, so despite being an otherwise warm jacket is offset by conductive chilling against the skin running the length of your arm and below the arm pit. I with there was some sort of lightweight insulation rather than just face fabric, or face fabric was used just under the arm the same length as it goes down the side with insulation on the rest of the arm. Seriously, you aren't generating excessive heat on your forearms, but you are most certainly losing heat unnecessarily because of the design. I also wish there was a hood bungee to cinch down the hood. I'm just going to say it: the toggle zipper pulls are stupid, and quickly were replaced by single pulls.

Great athletic fit. Elastic cuffs and adjustable waist are perfect for sealing out light breeze. Jacket is incredibly breathable, so it doesn't really stop any amount of wind. You definitely need a shell type layer if its windy out, but the soft liner makes it an incredibly comfy lightweight layer. I wear it almost daily with a t-shirt when its 40-50 in Boston, and will also put a Northface puffy and Black Diamond shell over it as a perfect system for hiking the White Mountains in the Winter. Incredibly versatile layer.

I've had this jacket a few weeks and worn it nonstop. It is very lightweight and comfortable. I blocks the wind just enough while still being breathable. No insulation on the underarms feels cool to the touch when wearing short sleeves and does not allow excessive heat buildup with a baselayer. It's been comfortable from the low 40s to mid 60s to this point, and sheds light rain and dries quickly. The fit is comfortable for casual wear. Durability will be the big question with the very light and fluffy insulation fabric and lightweight pertex face. No odor even though I've worn it daily for a couple of weeks. HIghly recommended, I now want to get rid of some of my standard fleeces that are less versatile.

This thing is really COOL! The lining in this jacket is actually breathable so I can wear it while mountain biking now that the temps are getting chilly. I run pretty hot while peddling so the 2-way zip allows me to open it up from the bottom while climbing and keep my body temp in a comfortable zone. I'm very excited to try this out as a mid layer this ski season as well as on the skin track.

They've Done it Again!

I loved the MTN Air shell all spring and for summer alpine pursuits. The highlights of that jacket have now expanded to an insulating mid layer with all the benefits. The fit is incredible with sleeves covering the full arm length when reaching high for holds. It breathes well with high output and the shell material continues to protect from wind and light rain. The bright green accents the clean black look well. I'm a big fan of this piece and anticipate it being my go-to midlayer for touring season.
