Ripped on second trip of the year

I'm getting older (56) and colder and so wanted an insulated ski jacket (have been layering and skiing in shells for years). I called Backcountry.com to discuss this product before buying, with one main question. Is this a great ski jacket OR a great ski jacket for the price? i.e. If I were to spend, say, $500 for a Patagonia, Stio, Mountain Hardware etc. jacket would it be worth that much more, or does this BC.com compete with those offerings? The rep told me it was a great ski jacket period. So I bought it and, on my second foray of 2023 into the snowy Wasatch Mountains the jacket ripped--small but still very visible and open to moisture--on the back panel. Plus a secondary tear (smaller) lower down. On the one hand I ski the trees so it's possible this happened in the woods; on the other hand I've been tree skiing since 1985 and this is the first coat to rip from normal use. An online chat rep at BC.com tried to get me either a return/exchange or partial refund but her managers said no because, they said, "This could have happened from skiing." OK, I'm pretty sure the jacket is listed as an "insulated ski jacket" not an "insulated try to look cool in the neighborhood coffee shop jacket," but because I like other features of it, I'll just duct tape it and move on. Bottom line: If durability matters, pay extra for a top brand.

Great jacket

All weather/temperature jacket. Side vents allow great airflow control. Pockets are large and easy to access. Hood nice but ability to remove it or store it in a pocket would a nice feature. Quality good but mine did have a hole in the right front pocket. Would recommend to a friend.

Great Jacket!

Used it once, and loved it. The insulation and waterproofing is great. There are lots of vents and enough pockets without looking bad. The hood fits well over your helmet and keeps you warm, and dry. And there are lots of options to keep the snow out if you go in powder, like the powder skirt. It looks clean and well fitting, while also being able to layer up underneath. I got a huge cyber deal which definitely made it well worth it.

Totally cuts the mustard!

So I got a chance to test this jacket today in -4 degree (with wind chill felt like -25 degrees) snowy/windy day and it totally holds up. It is definitely built to layer and has plenty of room to do so without feeling too big with minimal layers. In those weather conditions, I had on a 200g base layer top, thin omni heat mid layer and a 650 fill power down vest. I stayed outside for 30 minutes and stood in the wind and was completely comfortable. I like the 3 way hood adjustments so the hood stayed put despite the high winds. The pockets will be perfect for skiing; not in the way but definitely functional. What is also not in the description is that it comes with a goggle cleaners in the chest pocket - nice little feature which is easy to access while on the lift. Colors look sick (I got the green/yellow/white version). I also got a screaming deal a little after cyber Monday. Well worth the dough in my opinion!

Great weight for skiing--enough insulation and venting options to be comfortable for spring season, relaxed fit but not baggy--allows for mid layers and base layers for January. Functional powder skirt, lots of pockets with thoughtful layout. Waterproofing great so far, only wish the Backcountry icon on the sleeve were black for better contrast and to match the cuffs. Stylish, and nice and bright to help avoid those tourist collisions on piste.

Lacking durability

I recently purchased this jacket for a trip out west. I was very excited, as it checked all my boxes and was at a great price point. I was about halfway through my first day when I noticed a rip about 5-inches long across the front pocket. I was barely warmed up and only had made 1-2 runs through the woods, where I assumed this happened (?). The jacket's durability is a 0 out of 5 stars. All other characteristics hit the mark, but just wish this would last in situations other than simply sitting at the lodge's outdoor bar.

Sizing is off for me,

I'm 5'9", 180. I wear a 33" waist x 30" L Pants. I ordered a Meium. The sleaves were down to the end of my pinky so I had to return it. Everythig else seemed to fit good. Seemed like a nice jacket and I like all the pockets, snow skirt, colors (yellow, green and white). I swithced it for Mountain Hardware which offers a SHORT version.

Just received this in the mail. Looks great, material is stretchy, comfortable, and softer than most ski jackets. Zippers and everything else feel like quality stuff. Great deal at the price.
