Zipper is the weak point

I purchased my cottonwood bibs and jacket in 2021. They had a winner minus a glaring flaw with the zipper size. It is too small and it binds. It has done this from day 1 but the warranty doesn’t back up the design flaw. Getting the zipper started is an issue and it binds. Why for a jacket like this they would go cheap on the zipper astounds me… such a minor cost to put in a quality zipper. The zipper binds when traveling above the collar bone to fully zipped. It just hangs and it is a fight. This is because no one considered the tooth size for a small zipper would be impossible to zip when the fabric is worn and bent at natural human angles. So you unzip the jacket to access a pocket inside… well good luck. If it is fully zipped and the jacket is on your body you are not doing this easily. Same goes for zipping it back up to fully zipped. Starting the zipper is again an issue. It binds immediately. Some of the teeth seem loose at this point and I’m hoping it gets through another season without breaking. Pretty dissapointing. The complaints regarding the hood and a helmet are legit. You pretty much can’t ski with the hood up and have any peripheral vision. Perhaps they fixed this but mine is terrible. I get lots of comments that are positive regarding the appearance in the lift line and when I ride with people. It is a bummer to have to tell them to avoid the jacket due to the weak zipper. Being in Utah, and skiing the cottonwoods I doubt you are getting many positive referral sales for this jacket from me. Regards, Ski Patrol Alum

This is an amazing coat. I struggle often with shells because I have a swimmers build uptop and a rhinoceros build below. I have longer than proportionate arms. (Ape index anyone?) I have had my eyes on this kit for a while and just put it through the ringer last week. I skied hard open to close, took many tumbles, apre'd hard as well and was comfortable, dry and got comments the entire day. When this first came out of the box I was worried, it was very boxy and long in the arms, even for an orangutan like me. However after a little wear, it settled and fits perfectly (L top, M Bottom) Never once was my movement restricted, or did I feel like I was wearing a tarp. I was dry and the water beaded right off, even when others around me were soaked. There are more than enough pockets of all sizes, and the goggle wipe on a tether is *chef's kiss* The pocket zippers stayed closed the whole time even though one spectacular five point yard sale. Sometimes in shells, when a pocket is full it gives the wearer a lumpy appearance but this is not the case for this one, couldn't tell I had: extra goggles, water bottle, protein bar, turnikit, knife, beanie, phone, maps, balaclava all in the front. There are other comments about the front zipper, I didn't have any issues albeit being very stiff I do also have the matching bibs and they fit great. Buy them, you won't be disappointed.

I have been using this jacket for a few weeks now and I never have to worry about running out of pocket space. The gortex material is very durable and lightweight. It’s a perfect resort skiing jacket and keeps me warm on the coldest of days. I had no issues with the zipper it just takes some finagling rarely.

Bad Zipper BC on gives45 day warranty

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

While I loved the coat the zipper failed. The gearhead I call had me write an email to the warranty department. I sent three emails which I got a 3 read receipts, but still no reply. When ordering another ski jacket a gearhead got me an RMA# to return my old coat. 10 days later they sent an email that they were sending the jacket back because of the 45 days. BEWARE of BACKCOUNTRY BRANDS they only give a 45 day return. So If you buy a ski jacket early , do not ski for two months and have a broken zipper on day 1. You have wasted $500. Needless to say I am sending the new ski jacket back for my $ and ordering one from a vendor that honors their products.

Zipper is a Major Issue

I really like the design of this jacket and the material, but the zipper is a major issue. This is a 3 layer Gortex shell and designed to be outside. The zipper is not. It's tiny. It's week. It splits open and the teeth are not robust enough to keep the zipper closed.... a nightmare when out in the elements. My first jacket was replaced by warranty and I had the exact same issue with the 2nd jacket. That's 2 season's in a row with outerwear issues. Not good.

This jacket is great for charging in powder or just riding groomers out. One suggestion I would make, the zipper on the bottom tends to creep up and reverse zip from the bottom up. So some sort of feature that would keep this lower zipper secure. Other than that love the jacket and recommend.

I've used this jacket many times in the backcountry. I normally use it for snowshoeing up mountains. I've tested it in cold and stormy conditions and it performs excellent! This is the area where the jacket has earned three stars. I would like to rate it with 5, but... Unfortunately the front zipper is a problem. It gets stuck at the bottom and I have to fiddle with it a lot to get the zipper open. The zipper has issues on the track and I've gotten better at knowing how to fiddle with it. This becomes a problem when my hands are cold and I start to lose the fine motor skills of my fingers. I would like a front zipper that can do its job with no hassle. There is another review further down discussing the same zipper issue happening within a week of purchasing the jacket and then they replaced it only to have the same problem happen again three days later. The zipper problems happened with me about a week after owning the jacket. I still use it, but I'm also probably going to look for another jacket from a more reputable brand like Mammut. When I purchased the jacket at the warehouse, the backcountry employee mentioned that the zipper was an issue in previous seasons and he was hoping they would have fixed it by now. Clearly not! I think it's time to start finding new places to source faulty components that are well known at this point. It's an amazing jacket from a performance standpoint by keeping me warm in harsh weather conditions and I don't like docking it points over a small component such as the zipper.

I like it!

I bought in January and have skiied 20 times in it. Waterproof works perfectly. In medium rains, I was still dry when others in my group said they were soaked. It’s more waterproof than my previous $700+ Arcteryx hardshell. This one is almost just half of the price. It’s not insulated but that’s actually better for me. Layering was easy. Design and functionalities was good. Enough of pockets. High quality seams and zips. Mine was blue and I like the color. I got a few times “I like your color” from others in lift lines. I bought the Cottonwoods jacket and bib pants together. That’s my first time buying BC stuff. I regret why I haven’t done that earlier. I feel BC jacket and pants offer the same quality and functionalities as Arcteryx and Burton AK series, but at a much lower price. Strongly recommended.

i give this jacket three stars because this honestly is a good jacket at a good price, it just isn't the right jacket for me. I was really excited to try out this cottonwoods jacket while skiing the cottonwoods this year. It does some things pretty well. This jacket is bomb-proof. When they say it's built for a 100-day season, believe it. It has performed perfectly shell-wise in every condition and terrain you can think of. I've never had any problem with wind, snow, sleet, ice, scrapes, anything. I've rode it resort and backcountry. It also has A LOT of pockets for a full-zip if you're into that. There are also some definite drawbacks. As a result of being super durable and hurricane proof, the shell is VERY stiff. As a freeride snowboarder, this is a definite problem for me. There are also just some personal nuances that I don't like, number 1 being the collar. The collar on this jacket seems huge for some reason, and it's extremely annoying, especially for a snowboarder who likes to ride with a hood even when my head is turned the whole time. I personally also find the extreme number of pockets a little overkill, and the fit is a little weird. Overall, this jacket would be perfect for any skier looking for a hardcore GORE-TEX storm shell that is honestly a good deal. However, I wouldn't recommend it to any snowboarder.
