Why We Built The Backcountry Cardiac GORE-TEX PRO Jacket
"I've got enough things on my mind while touring, and Backcountry gets it. Little details like the longer sleeves and the pocket layout streamline the transition from skinning to downhill." —Gearhead® Expert Alex
With updates to the GORE-TEX PRO membrane, we followed suit, recrafting the Backcountry Cardiac GORE-TEX PRO Jacket to keep it stretchy, durable, and touring-ready. Cutting-edge GORE-TEX PRO waterproof tech and multi-denier nylon keep this pinnacle jacket lightweight and breathable while providing the protection we need while chasing pow and summiting peaks. The helmet-compatible hood keeps us shielded from the storm, and underarm zippers dump heat fast on high-effort ascents. New pocket construction and an updated center zip improve usability, offering us access to our belongings without ditching the gloves.

Sizing is REALLY big.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- L
I’m 6’2” and 220lbs. I’m not a small guy. XL in everything I wear. Bought an XL and it fit like a tent. GiGANtic! Voluminous. So I returned it and ordered both an L and M. The large fit, but the hood is still really baggy (to fit over a helmet). M was too small (chest), but the sleeve length was ok. 🤷🏻♂️ Haven’t tested it on a snowy/rainy day yet, so maybe I’ll follow up later.

Simple yet high quality shell jacket
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Size Bought:
- Medium
I bought this before a trip out to Whistler 2 weeks ago. I wanted a shell jacket so I could layer up according to conditions, versus a one type (heavily insulated) jacket. Whistler weather had it all in the week I was there; 50mph winds; rain at the base; snow every day. The Black Diamond jacket has right amount of inside and outside pockets, the extra length keeps the snow out and the Gortex fabric and water proof zipper keeps the water out. My two pet peeves: 1) the rugged, waterproof zipper takes some getting used to. Its not the easiest to operate (but maybe that means it will last longer). 2) I wish the sleeve ends had mitt "cords" to attached easily to gloves/mitts. Having to buy after market bands that go around the wrist, get tangled up with trying to fit gloves over. For the price, a great quality and simple shell jacket that should last.

Great material, but runs big.

- Size Bought:
- Medium

if you typically wear size medium for jackets then get this in small. It runs big and long. Other than that this coat is great. Great material. Bright distinct color. Alot of pockets.

Compared to last gen
- Familiarity:

- XL

Lost the wrist gaiters compared to last model which were super nice for under cuff gloves. Otherwise seems well built and light. Has a goofy double zipper like you can zip it up in two seperate places one leaves a mesh vent if you zip the other it's fully sealed. Time will tell if this is nice to have or a gimmick. Really like the pocket on the front on both sides above the hip compared to just the one side. The inside access pocket from the outside opens up to the wrong side (right) for most chest pockets which are on the left on many mid layers... neck zip is still tight with a helmet on when zipped all the way up like the last model.
