Semi-baggy.
Fit has always been key to Assos' appeal, with the Swiss brand going to great lengths in order to ensure that its shorts and jerseys "click-on" once you're situated in the saddle. Given that insistence on perfectly body-hugging harmony, the RALLY Cargo Shorts may seem out of character. After all, they're baggies, and Assos' off-road gear has, to this point, been every bit as form-fitting as its road shorts—all of which is a laborious, round-about way to noting that the RALLY Cargo Shorts are more like a semi-baggy than a proper baggy fit.
The front panel is designed based on the paneling in Assos' S7 road shorts. Though it's not as form-fitting, it does closely follow your body in order to reduce catching the saddle nose or place a bunch of unnecessary material between you, the saddle, and—ultimately—the trail. The material is the same as used in the tight T.rallyShort, too, so it stretches to reduce restriction while pedaling up a climb or throwing the bike around in chunky terrain.
The shorts are equipped with mesh in order to manage internal moisture, but that additional material doesn't add bulk, so they still pair perfectly with the H.rallyBoxer. Excluding that mesh and the front panel, the shorts are made entirely from Type 498 fabric, a material that repels water, dries fast, and is built for longevity in the face of daily trail abuse. Fit is dial-able through the inclusion of waist and leg zippers, and Assos itself describes that fit as "casual." We suggest that's a bit of a miss-categorization, though, as the S7 DNA evident throughout the fit and design means that they're anything but casual.

The big difference, it seems, between assos and other brands is that assos designs their gear for riding on the bike and not for walking around. The leg of these shorts angle forward for a nice seated position. There are many well placed different material panels which improve breathability and durability where needed. The waist elastic is comfortable and adjustable more than shorts with a zipper. I’ve owned many shorts supposedly made for mtb but all are really just typical shorts that do not take into account the riding position. This short is like a road cycling short made for the trail. It does not have a chamois so I pair it with an assos trail liner or one of their summer bib. Of note, this combo pushes the price to $360 and north of $450 depending on your assos liner or bib. But you need a chamois and that is one thing I would not skimp on.

All I can say is wow. I had ridden Assos road gear in the past, was always happy with the fit and function so when time to purchase new MTB gear, I figured I would give this a try. I purchased the Rally short, trail liner and trail short sleeve jersey. First impressions brought in by the packaging alone led me to believe I was in for a treat...really nice touch. Upon opening the packages, the feel and quality of the finish delivered. As good as it looked and felt, I immediately thought; "how good can it be?", then i put it on. The fit and overall comfort is incredible and on the first ride I literally forgot i was wearing anything. Luckily for other trail users, the clothes were really there. The waist bands are probably the nicest fitting and comfortable I've experienced, the jersey is both loose and snug in all the right places. I was left completely impressed and will definitely purchase more. Only thing to consider is sizing when buying this. I'm typically a U.S> medium in most everything, but I sized up to large and was good to go.

Roadie Style

Roadies can ride dirt in style too. Assos OffRoad Rally collection is necessary for that XC racer that doesn't want to wear their Cento bibs on the dirt or their SS.Campionissimo Jersey and risk wear and tear. I purchased these since I was tired of my downhill boys making fun of me wearing lycra on the dirt. Throw these on over the T.RALLYSHORTS, or any other bibs, and you'll be set. Material is what you would expect from Assos, hardwearing, water repellent and fast drying. The zippered inserts on the waist and leg help to dial in the fit. Now all they have to make is a mountain bike shirt (Trekking Jersey does not count;). Please feel free to contact me if you have questions on these or any other Assos products. Size Purchased, Medium MEASUREMENTS: 5'10"; 140lbs Waist: 32in (if you are a 31" or 30" go with a Small)

These are my new favorite mountain bike short. They're lightweight, durable and very comfortable. I slide these on over the T.Rally bib short quite often, but I also wear these with any of my other liners as well. The elastic waist band is very comfortable and fit perfectly without any pinch-points. If I had to find one negative thing... I'd say that these could use one more pocket. However, for a mountain biking short, they're pretty darn close to perfect!
