Sleep under the stars in blissful comfort.

We get it. You prefer the creature comforts of home when you sleep under the stars. The Alps Mountaineering Velocity Air Bed helps you comfortably obtain eight hours (or more, we won't judge) of beauty sleep when you're camping at your favorite state park. The air bed's internal coil system gives you the comfort you're looking for in a top-of-the-line air bed, and it supports up to 500 pounds (queen size only).

This air bed works great for both indoor and outdoor use, meaning that you can easily accommodate your out-of-town pal or distant aunt in the living room, should they stop through town. Best of all, this air bed comes with a rechargeable pump that not only inflates this bed in minutes, but it also deflates the bed effortlessly for quick and easy take-down. Once fully deflated, simply throw it in the included carry bag for easy storage.

    Surprisingly Comfy, Shockingly Durable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

We are a family of five plus a 50 pound dog with talons. For a seven night trip we used two queen mattresses. They held up beautifully. I did put a tarp under the tent, but I wouldn't hesitate to set the mattresses on a raked ground. We used cheap polyester sleeping bags, so they slid around on the beds, but we were still warm without added liners or bedding in 50 degrees. I will say that I did not read the instructions. The pump is battery operated and will not operated while plugged in. Once I unplugged it, it worked wonderfully.

    so comfy!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Ive been sleeping on a little backpacking pad and finally broke down and bought this mattress... and damn is it nice. I now sleep like a little baby when we car camp. The pack sack makes it real easy to pack up and the mattress is made of very solid material. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great car camping mattress

    Awesome Matteress

I purchased the queen size as im a princess now and i was tired of sleeping on the ground or on my backpacking pads. Boy am i glad i got this thing. Far better that the plastic ploy mattresses you get on the cheap, and best part is this thing doesn't leave you deflated mid night. Durable, easy and comfortable.

      Comfortable queen size air mattress

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought the queen size mattress for when extra people come over my house, and for car camping. I followed the directions and did not have any problems with the pump like some other reviewers did. I charged it for 9 hours which is what the instructions say.. If you do that you could fill up several air mattresses. I couldn't get the pump to deflate the mattress, and ended up just doing it manually which is fine. According to the directions you are supposed to discharge the pump because that will improve the battery's longevity. I went to discharge the pump, and it went on for atleast 15 minutes, and that was after I had used the pump to inflate the mattress. So this is a powerful little pump. The mattress was comfortable and I personally slept on it one evening.

      why do you hate?

This thing is amazing, firm enough for my picky mother when she crashes our floor for an impromptu visit. The pump is quick and powerful, once you figure out how to use it. (hint, unplug it after charging.) Well worth it. We bought 2. Gave one to the wife's sister. She loves it.

Better than sleeping on the ground...

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've taken this on three camping trips now this summer. I have only charged the pump once and it is still working. I did invest in a foot pump after reading reviews of a poor pump, but so far I have not had any problems. I sleep much more comfortably with this mattress.

        Pretty awesome

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

We got this pad for camping (obviously) but it could easily be used if visiting someone and you needed a mattress. It is very comfortable. And fantastic quality. We didn't have any problems with the pump so far. We were a little worried about the size but it is great, not too big. We like it a lot.

Wish I would have purchased sooner!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this mattress for a little over a year and a half now and my only regret is not getting it sooner. A lot sooner! When we brought my son into the fold 3 years ago, my wife and I didn't want to quit doing the things we loved. So we made adjustments to make it easier to share our love of the outdoors with him.

We use to use our ultra light backpacking mattresses for car camping. I knew that wouldn't quite cut it for the offspring so I started by getting an air mattress at a hardware store that had a leak on it upon arrival. I hate naming names but I will tell you that it started with a C and ended with an oleman. Nothing more annoying than having to re-inflate an air mattress a couple times in one night on a cold early spring night in the desert. We re-upped with another hardware store air mattress only to be burned again!

I finally decided to plunk down the extra change for the Alps Mountaineering mattress. It has proved to be plenty durable even for a toddler who finds a way to destroy everything in his path. The pump charges quickly and gets good enough purchase on the mattress insert that you can just leave it on while you set up the rest of your camp. I have had no issues with said pump. We have used it consistently and often. We have used it mostly but not limited too the deserts of Southern Utah. It offers plenty of insulation from the ground and space for two adults is in spades. My son is a side sleeper; as in he sleeps perpendicular to mom and dad, with his head in my back and his feet in my wife's face. There is still barely enough room for the 3 of us when he chooses his primary sleeping position.

I can't sing enough praises for this mattress, especially after being burned by the aforementioned impostor mattresses. I would recommend it to any one looking for the ultimate car camp mattress.

mattress is great. throw the pump away

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

We've used the mattress for around 10 -15 nights and it is great. No issues whatsoever. The pump? Just throw it away on arrival and get a foot pump. Our first pump lasted a total of ONE inflation and died. Alps replaced it and the second pump lasted a total of ONE inflation and died. I followed the explicit charging instructions too. Fortunately, I carried a foot pump along and it doesn't take long to pump it up.

        Great mattress!

I’ve just gotten this and I’ve had it blown up for about a week. No air has been lost. I don’t know about the rechargeable pump because I’ve only needed to use it once but it worked like it should

          Its a hoot!

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great for glamping or car camping, slightly thinner than your typical air mattress, but feels a lot sturdier due to the baffles in the body of the bed. Super comfortable and holds air like a champ!

          No Chemical Reaction

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Overall I am happy with it. We will see how long it lasts, but I am chemically sensitive and had zero problems with this mattress right out of the box. It was comfortable and I slept well. I will be ordering a back up mattress because I know I cannot use the ones at Walmart, Target etc. and I love camping.

Also very happy with the fast shipping!

          Great Mattress, Crap Pump

I've had the twin for 3 years. I plugged the rechargeable pump in on Friday night prior to a Saturday overnight to ensure a full charge. I slept on the ground, as the battery was bricked and died within seconds. As far as the mattress itself, it's far more comfortable than a closed-cell foam pad or a Thermarest, but only if you can inflate it.

            Decent for an air-mattress

            • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These seem to be well constructed, and the pump worked fine the one time we used it; but overall it just isn't right for me - the bed is incredibly noisy compared to a self-inflating mattress, so much so that it woke up my partner whenever I shifted around. Plus, they don't seem to insulate at all - which is probably true for all air-mattresses, I just wasn't aware prior to trying this one.

            Great for car camping

I picked this up a few months ago and I've been using it on overnight trips and weekend getaways.

I drive a Subaru outback so it fits pretty well with the rear seats folded down. Fully inflated you need to move the front seat forward in order for the entire mattress to be entirely inflated.

No complaints so far, the feel of the mattress is soft so that you don't need sheets on it but obviously you want your sleeping bag or just a throw blanket depend upon temperature

              • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This air mattress is tough. I have been through several less expensive options only to wake up on the ground. It has held up for my chocolate lab and my kiddos very well.

The one con is the pump. Keeping it charged is a hassle. Ours only fills the mattress once or twice before needing to be recharged.

              Gear for the fam

              • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have plenty of backpacking gear that I love. But, to get the family in the tent I needed some good quality luxury bedding. I bought the queen for me and wifey and the twin for the kid. They are comfortable and easy to pack down into their bag. The pumps aren't' the best, but they do the job just fine. Charge it before you leave.

              Great Mattress, Horrible Pump

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comfortable mattress, hold air well, 3rd night I did need to reinflate a bit. The pump sucks. Takes forever to charge, doesn't hold it well, and the power is really weak, takes a long time to inflate, and the last time I used it I literally had to use my mouth instead at the very end because it is so weak and useless. Also as others mentioned you are supposed to charge it when it is completely empty. So you have to leave it on until its completely dead before plugging it in-- an extra hassle. Lastly you can't turn it on while its connected to the charger, so don't expect you can plug it in to wall/car after it starts to go and be able to inflate anything. I found the car charger useless as I didn't want to leave my car on for 8 hours or risk a dead battery given that the car has to be on for it to charge even if engine is not turned on. I'll plan on buying a 3rd party pump (manual perhaps) next trip.

              awesome air mattress

              • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I shopped around for a few weeks before I bought this. Most air mattresses I looked at seemed cheap and felt like they would pop easily. This thing is tough! I feel very confident in its ability to withstand punctures. It feels really good. It's not squishy like some others. It fits perfectly in my marmot tungsten 3P tent. I'm 6'3 and I have plenty of room on it, even with someone else next to me.
The pump is decent. You do need to hold it in place while it inflates or deflates, but it goes fast enough that it's really not a big deal. It is nice that it comes with a car charger and a wall charger. The bag it comes in is nice and big, so you don't have to roll it up just perfect for it to fit. It isn't terribly small though. You wouldn't want to take this backpacking. But for car camping or a short hike in, it's perfect.

I had a few questions about shipping when I ordered this. My gearhead, Jason Setser, was super cool and very helpful. I love Backcountry and the awesome people that work there.

              Unanswered Question

can anyone confirm that the actual width of the mattress is 56"? My tent claims it has a width of 56" but in actuality it is around 48-50" depending on how much you stretch the sidewalls. Trying to find a good air mattress option when not backpacking.

What is the R-value? Does anybody know of any queen size mattresses that are insulated like the smaller backpacking ones are such as the NeoAir? These things get COLD but I can't seem to find any insulated ones in larger sizes.

Not sure on the R Value, but I'm confident it wouldn't be impressive. Since we just use it car camping we bring some down blankets along to lay down ontop of the mattress for insulation. Improves the warmth and adds an additional comfort factor.
