Sleep under the stars in blissful comfort.

We get it. You prefer the creature comforts of home when you sleep under the stars. The Alps Mountaineering Velocity Air Bed helps you comfortably obtain eight hours (or more, we won't judge) of beauty sleep when you're camping at your favorite state park. The air bed's internal coil system gives you the comfort you're looking for in a top-of-the-line air bed, and it supports up to 500 pounds (queen size only).

This air bed works great for both indoor and outdoor use, meaning that you can easily accommodate your out-of-town pal or distant aunt in the living room, should they stop through town. Best of all, this air bed comes with a rechargeable pump that not only inflates this bed in minutes, but it also deflates the bed effortlessly for quick and easy take-down. Once fully deflated, simply throw it in the included carry bag for easy storage.

Wish I would have purchased sooner!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this mattress for a little over a year and a half now and my only regret is not getting it sooner. A lot sooner! When we brought my son into the fold 3 years ago, my wife and I didn't want to quit doing the things we loved. So we made adjustments to make it easier to share our love of the outdoors with him.
We use to use our ultra light backpacking pack-able mattresses for car camping. I knew that wouldn't quite cut it for the offspring so I started by getting an air mattress at a hardware store that had a leak on it upon arrival. I hate naming names but I will tell you that it started with a C and ended with an oleman. Nothing more annoying than having to re-inflate an air mattress a couple times in one night on a cold early spring night in the desert. We re-upped with another hardware store air mattress with the same issue from a company that started with an I and ended with ntex and that mattress was even worse.
I finally decided to plunk down the extra change for the Alps Mountaineering mattress and only wish I would have done so way sooner. It has proved to be plenty durable even for a toddler who finds a way to destroy everything in his path. The pump charges quickly and gets good enough purchase on the mattress insert that you can just leave it on while you set up the rest of your camp. I have had no issues with said pump. We have used it consistently and often. We have used it mostly but not limited too the deserts of Southern Utah. It offers plenty of insulation from the ground and space for two adults is in spades. My son is a side sleeper; as in he sleeps perpendicular to mom and dad, with his head in my back and his feet in my wife's face. There is still barely enough room for the 3 of us when he chooses his primary sleeping position.
While most folks won't be dragging this mattress into the backcountry without pack horses or hired help, it does pack down very small and is fairly light weight relative to it's inflated size. If you're like me car space can come at a premium when your traveling with bikes, kayaks, and other gear. With this in mind I wish I would have purchased this mattress even before we brought our now toddler into the fold. My wife and I use to use our backpacking mattresses when en-route to our backpacking destinations. I wish I would have had this mattress for those occasions. We would put so much thought into placement of gear in our packs only to pack and unpack our sleeping gear and tents for car camping while on our way to our backing packing destination. The Alps would have given us more comfortable nights sleep and saved us from said packing and unpacking of our meticulously packed packs. Say that 3 times fast!
I can't sing enough praises for this mattress, especially after being burned by the aforementioned impostor mattresses. I would recommend it to any one looking for the ultimate car camp mattress. I wouldn't put it past those with the means to to use it as a base camp mattress either though.

mattress is great. throw the pump away

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

We've used the mattress for around 10 -15 nights and it is great. No issues whatsoever. The pump? Just throw it away on arrival and get a foot pump. Our first pump lasted a total of ONE inflation and died. Alps replaced it and the second pump lasted a total of ONE inflation and died. I followed the explicit charging instructions too. Fortunately, I carried a foot pump along and it doesn't take long to pump it up.

    Great mattress!

I’ve just gotten this and I’ve had it blown up for about a week. No air has been lost. I don’t know about the rechargeable pump because I’ve only needed to use it once but it worked like it should

      Its a hoot!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great for glamping or car camping, slightly thinner than your typical air mattress, but feels a lot sturdier due to the baffles in the body of the bed. Super comfortable and holds air like a champ!

      No Chemical Reaction

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Overall I am happy with it. We will see how long it lasts, but I am chemically sensitive and had zero problems with this mattress right out of the box. It was comfortable and I slept well. I will be ordering a back up mattress because I know I cannot use the ones at Walmart, Target etc. and I love camping.

Also very happy with the fast shipping!

      Great Mattress, Crap Pump

I've had the twin for 3 years. I plugged the rechargeable pump in on Friday night prior to a Saturday overnight to ensure a full charge. I slept on the ground, as the battery was bricked and died within seconds. As far as the mattress itself, it's far more comfortable than a closed-cell foam pad or a Thermarest, but only if you can inflate it.

        Decent for an air-mattress

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These seem to be well constructed, and the pump worked fine the one time we used it; but overall it just isn't right for me - the bed is incredibly noisy compared to a self-inflating mattress, so much so that it woke up my partner whenever I shifted around. Plus, they don't seem to insulate at all - which is probably true for all air-mattresses, I just wasn't aware prior to trying this one.

        Great for car camping

I picked this up a few months ago and I've been using it on overnight trips and weekend getaways.

I drive a Subaru outback so it fits pretty well with the rear seats folded down. Fully inflated you need to move the front seat forward in order for the entire mattress to be entirely inflated.

No complaints so far, the feel of the mattress is soft so that you don't need sheets on it but obviously you want your sleeping bag or just a throw blanket depend upon temperature

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This air mattress is tough. I have been through several less expensive options only to wake up on the ground. It has held up for my chocolate lab and my kiddos very well.

The one con is the pump. Keeping it charged is a hassle. Ours only fills the mattress once or twice before needing to be recharged.

          Gear for the fam

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have plenty of backpacking gear that I love. But, to get the family in the tent I needed some good quality luxury bedding. I bought the queen for me and wifey and the twin for the kid. They are comfortable and easy to pack down into their bag. The pumps aren't' the best, but they do the job just fine. Charge it before you leave.

          Great Mattress, Horrible Pump

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comfortable mattress, hold air well, 3rd night I did need to reinflate a bit. The pump sucks. Takes forever to charge, doesn't hold it well, and the power is really weak, takes a long time to inflate, and the last time I used it I literally had to use my mouth instead at the very end because it is so weak and useless. Also as others mentioned you are supposed to charge it when it is completely empty. So you have to leave it on until its completely dead before plugging it in-- an extra hassle. Lastly you can't turn it on while its connected to the charger, so don't expect you can plug it in to wall/car after it starts to go and be able to inflate anything. I found the car charger useless as I didn't want to leave my car on for 8 hours or risk a dead battery given that the car has to be on for it to charge even if engine is not turned on. I'll plan on buying a 3rd party pump (manual perhaps) next trip.

          awesome air mattress

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I shopped around for a few weeks before I bought this. Most air mattresses I looked at seemed cheap and felt like they would pop easily. This thing is tough! I feel very confident in its ability to withstand punctures. It feels really good. It's not squishy like some others. It fits perfectly in my marmot tungsten 3P tent. I'm 6'3 and I have plenty of room on it, even with someone else next to me.
The pump is decent. You do need to hold it in place while it inflates or deflates, but it goes fast enough that it's really not a big deal. It is nice that it comes with a car charger and a wall charger. The bag it comes in is nice and big, so you don't have to roll it up just perfect for it to fit. It isn't terribly small though. You wouldn't want to take this backpacking. But for car camping or a short hike in, it's perfect.

I had a few questions about shipping when I ordered this. My gearhead, Jason Setser, was super cool and very helpful. I love Backcountry and the awesome people that work there.

          Leisure Living

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked this up recently for car camping. Boy am I glad I did. It's not quite like sleeping on a cloud, but it pretty close considering you're sleeping under the stars.

Charge the pump prior to leaving your house and you can pump this pad up in mere minutes. The anchors that tie the top and bottom of the pad together help to maintain it's shape and ensure it doesn't sag if one occupant is heavier than the other.

This fits perfectly in my 3 man ten and gives me adequate room for me, my girlfriend, and my dog. We were cozy and warm this past weekend sleeping in temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

I highly recommend this pad if you want king-like comfort while camping.

          Car camp in luxury

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've decided for car camping I'm going to be as comfortable as possible. Finally stopped using my ultralight pad and use this for those times. Sleep great and awesome price.

          Dog Friendly!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is on the deluxe end of sleeping pads for sure. I will using this camping for our walk in sites plus as an air mattress on the floor for vacations if needed . We have a golden doodle pup and he pounced all over this thing with no problems at all! It fits perfectly corner to corner of our tent which makes for a nice solid sleeping space. I would highly recommend for a camping trip, not so much backpacking at all!!

          Dog Friendly!

          Comfortable and holds air

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bed is not as tall as a typical air bed so I was worried that I wouldn't be comfortable. I was so wrong! It is very comfortable and durable. I like that the fabric seems very heavy and resistant. I wasn't worried about my dog's nails ripping this fabric! The bed held air for 2 nights without needing to pump more in at all. I wish it came with a car charger adaptor.

Michelle, How's this air bed holding for you and your dog? We have three labs (each weighing 60lb plus), and I'm wondering if the fabric could tolerate them. Will you share what type of dog you have and how much he/she weighs? Thanks! -E.

          Loving it

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked this up in a Queen size as a birthday present for my girlfriend for car camping. So far we've both been super impressed with it after a few outings. We've just used it twice car camping and she's also tossed it in the car when traveling to friends places out of town as a more comfortable option than the floor or couch.

          1. Stiff! I don't know what the "internal coil system" really means but apparently it works. I was pretty hesitant about getting an air mattress in the first place. I was worried, that like most I've seen before, rolling around on one side would buck your partner off the other. This has not been an issue at all with this mattress. I make sure to give the mattress a top off before bed when temperatures have gone down since inflating it and it stays stiff throughout the night with no deflation issues yet. I'm able to roll around on my side and she normally sleeps right through it. IMOP this is the highlight of this air mattress.
          2. Tough. As we haven't used it extensively yet I can't comment fully on this point but the material feel strong and durable. We've also had my dog sleeping on the mattress with us without any puncture issues yet.
          3. Simple and easy. It's quick to inflate or deflate with the included pump, takes just a few minutes. It's not a pain to stuff it into it's included carrying case, it's just the right size.

          1. The pump is just ok. It makes a decent enough seal when inflating or deflating so long as you're sitting there holding it in the right position. My biggest annoyance with it is the lack of a battery indicator light. The instructions say not to recharge it until the battery is fully depleted to maintain longevity of the battery... but how are you supposed to do that when there's no indicator? Or know that the battery has been fully charged? Right now we're just guessing on battery life and airing on the side of caution. At least it comes with a car charging cigarette adapter just in case, but an indicator light and possibly a way to lock the nozzle into the valve on the mattress would definitely be an improvement to the pump.

Overall my annoyance with the lack of a battery indicator light on the pump is a pretty minor issue. What's most important is that this is a comfortable, stiff, and hopefully durable air mattress at a great price point. If my opinion changes over time I'll update my review, but based on my first impression I highly recommend this product!

Josh, How's this air bed holding for you and your dog? We have three labs (each weighing 60lb plus), and I'm wondering if the fabric could tolerate them. Will you share what type of dog you have and how much he/she weighs? Thanks! -E.

I have a 45 lb Heeler, she's spent alot of nights in the tent with this mattress with no issues to date. However, there is always the risk, especially with 3 heavier dogs. I doubt you'll find a better tougher option, and I want to say you'll be fine (and if your not Alps Warranty department is AWESOME!), but there's no guarantee.

          Unanswered Question

can anyone confirm that the actual width of the mattress is 56"? My tent claims it has a width of 56" but in actuality it is around 48-50" depending on how much you stretch the sidewalls. Trying to find a good air mattress option when not backpacking.

What is the R-value? Does anybody know of any queen size mattresses that are insulated like the smaller backpacking ones are such as the NeoAir? These things get COLD but I can't seem to find any insulated ones in larger sizes.

Not sure on the R Value, but I'm confident it wouldn't be impressive. Since we just use it car camping we bring some down blankets along to lay down ontop of the mattress for insulation. Improves the warmth and adds an additional comfort factor.
