    GLCR Hydra Thermagraph Insulated Jacket

Stormy days at the resort and frigid mornings in the backcountry call for the warmth and waterproofing of the 686 Men's GLCR Hydra Thermagraph Insulated Jacket. Built with an articulated fit and strategically placed insulation for ease of movement and comfort, the Hydra can handle everything from hot laps through your favorite pow stash to long tours in technical terrain.

The InfiDry shell keeps wind and snow at bay, and offers high breathability to keep you from getting clammy during intense hikes. Fully taped seams prevent moisture from sneaking in the jacket, and mapped Thermagraph insulation delivers more warmth where you need and less where you don't, saving on weight and bulk. Mesh-lined underarm vents help you cool off after heart-pounding powder runs, while the adjustable powder skirt links up to your 686 pants to create a snow-proof barrier on deep days. An asymmetric zipper design keeps the zipper out of your face and the ventilated chin guard lets your breath escape so you won't end up with foggy goggles.

Fantastic jacket - a real find!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Spring is finally here, and you've spent a long winter just *dying* to get off the trainer and out on your bike again. Problem is, it's maybe 30F outside, windy and damp. The roads are good, but hypothermia is calling...

Enter the 686 insulated jacket! It has lots of insulation where you need it, the sleeves velcro-up, and the powder skirt is a cyclist's dream. The hood is described (in reviews) as a bit skimpy, but it fits PERFECTLY under a bike helmet and the collar zips up to keep the cold and wind out. If you're going to use it as a bike jacket you might want to buy a size over your usual -- for arm stretch and warm sublayers.

Here in Northern Minnesota, I got 10 miles in in January(!), and I'll get 100 in in March. Nice weather may be coming, but until then I'm all in in the 686.

    Overall effective jacket

Bought once at sun ski sports and thought the zipper was defective as it was difficult to get started. Returned it and then ordered another online from backcountry to give it another chance. The zipper was a little easier but still not real easy to get started. Also the vent zippers in the under arm area were jammed half way and it took me removing it and tediously working in the zipper to get it un-jammed. So without the zipper snafu, it's a pretty awesome and functional jacket. Loose and lots of pocket options. I liked having the offset zipper so it wasn't rubbing against my face when zipped up. It kept me warm in the core areas and I just worn a pullover sweatshirt. It was 25°f with 20-30mph winds and I felt pretty comfy.

Overall I am pretty happy with this trendy and functional product.

    Solid Touring Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 140lbs

I use this for splitboarding and it's very warm and durable. It also looks nice. The only reason it gets 4 stars are the hood and zipper. The zipper is a PITA sometimes, but this is fairly negligible once you have it zipped. If you're planning to take it on/off a lot, that may be an issue. The hood is also a little small for a helmet. I just don't bother using it though. It's fine for a hat.

Pros: Nice design, warm, comfy, I found it to run the size I needed (M). Offset zipper design/ventilation is nice.

Cons: Zipper seems to have trouble getting started. Hood is small.

I really want to love this jacket

I was drawn to this coat by the offset zipper. Its aesthetically pleasing and not a common trend in my area. The idea is great, with it being off center at the top, you don't have cold metal against your lips when you’re going down trails. In real life, 99% of the time I wear this coat will be to my work, when its below 40 degrees and snowing or raining. I work in an office setting that's casual enough to wear jeans every day, so my wool coat is too formal, plus no hood. This coat goes perfect with my typical winter office attire.
Two things that keep this coat from being 5 stars - the main zipper and the hood. I got mine as a Christmas present and noticed immediately that the zipper was almost always tough to get started. I waited a month for it to break in, it never improved. The kind folks at Backcountry let me return it for another. My coat was purchased on a Black Friday sale, stored until Christmas, and they let me return it at the end of January - with free return shipping. Backcountry could NOT have handled my concerns any better. After 2 weeks of using my replacement, I believe the zipper tracking troubles are with the design - as this new coat has the same trait.
My other semi-gripe is the hood. Its smaller than normal. Every time I use it, I think about a raincoat I have by Pelagic, with a hood that's too big. In that coat, I cannot run with the hood up, it will get caught in the wind and fall. With this coat, there's a struggle to either raise or lower the hood if the zipper is all the way up. I've yet to use this on a mountain - where the smaller hood could definitely be considered a feature. For daily use (like taking my dog out in the cold rain) it’s more of a bug.
The offset zipper definitely takes some getting used to. On a typical coat when you zip it up to your sternum, the two top most portions will fall outward or down on your chest. With this coat, that left side tends to stick up, and poke you in the chin. I've found that I mostly wear it zipped all the way up to avoid that feeling. Once zipped completely, it is easy and comfortable to kind of push the neck down, so that it sits below your chin.
The lower pockets are well positioned, and the left chest pocket is great for a larger phone (like a Pixel XL). It falls into its place easily, and will not fall out of the pocket if you leave it unzipped, and bend at the waist.
The thumb-holes in the wrist lining (emo-grips?) are a nice touch. Comfortable and I'm sure make it easy to tuck in riding gloves when I finally get this thing on a trail.
To me this coat true to size, because I consider it a snowboarding coat. They should be big to allow for several layers, glove overlap and what not.

    ENORMOUS

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I just got this for my 15 year old son. Mens medium. He is 5'6" 150. It is GIGANTIC. Super bummed, as I needed this for our trip to CO in a few days. Design seems good, very minimal insulation, zippers well placed and well protected. Just a very large jacket.

    So far so good

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 185lbs

Only had one day in it, but it was during a 10 inch powder day with snow coming down all day and it all stayed out. Pockets in all the right places leaves little complaints. The only thing i wish was different was a bigger hood to go over my helmet. I can get it over now, but its very constrictive.

    Great jacket, zipper broke

Love this jacket, comfortable, warm, really nailed it for me. Good pockets too. Downer: after 5 days of riding the bottom ‘insert pin’ broke off rendering the zipper useless. Going through the warranty/repair process now. Despite that, I would buy this jacket again.

      Not just for men!

This is for all the ladies out there. I am 5’10, weigh 150lbs, have big booty and a small waist. I ordered size Medium. I wanted a high quality coat that could be worn snowboarding and snowshoeing, but also out for drinks. I invested a lot of time into researching my options. Basically - I would need to spend over $400 for a beautiful parka from a well known expensive brand to even get close to what I wanted. And then, it would be bulky and difficult to travel with, and ultimately good for snowshoeing, but not snowboarding. Enter 686. The styles were attractive and versatile, technical aspects were superior, and the prices were comparatively low. This jacket ticked every box. I ordered the all black color way, which makes it easy to wear out for drinks with some tight black pants and boots, but also can be worn with wacky pattern hats etc on slopes for something more fun and casual. The coat is very warm for its thickness, so it will be easy to travel with. The outer layer is a nice matte black, so it’s not too sporty. It’s also a wonderfully flexible fabric that is quite soft for being waterproof, so it doesn’t make a bunch of noise when you move. Clearly this fit looks great on guys, but let me tell you, it looks damn good on ladies too. It falls just below my crotch, and the arm length is perfect as well. It has room to layer up for intense weather but is fitted enough where its not obvious at all that I’m wearing a men’s garment. I originally purchased this jacket on Backcountry simply because the black colorway was sold out on 686 website.. I am so glad I did though. I ran into an issue with a promo code, and the customer service I received via the online chat was OUTSTANDING. Last thing: Ladies, don’t settle for the limited variety you see offered for women’s snow coats! There is far more to pick from in the men’s section, and it very well may fit you just fine - or in some cases like mine - BETTER than the women’s. Also, plenty of brands offer better tech in their men’s coats, and the women’s version of those same styles will for example, not be as waterproof. So don’t hold back, try the men’s stuff if you like it!

High quality at a great price

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Height: 5'11"
        • Weight: 155lbs

This jacket is great for staying warm on a weight budget. The jacket feels like a shell but still warms you up extremely well. I would definitely recommend for anyone who finds themselves too warm because they are riding hard.

        Great Jacket! Awesome Style!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size

Talk about going nuclear on the slope. This jacket enables you to have all the style with all the luxury of a top quality garment. Its warm in the shade and cool in the sun. Tons of pockets and the diagonal zipper allows you to zip all the way up without chafing.

        Awesome all around jacket!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size

Was slightly skeptical of the shell plus some insulation, but after wearing this jacket a couple times I'm a fan! The insulation does add in a little extra warmth to those targeted areas without making the jacket fit weird or look bulky.

Great looking jacket, all the right features, and an overall quality shell! I would highly recommend this one.

        SOLID

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
        • Size Bought: XL
        • Height: 6'3"
        • Weight: 180lbs

I got this jacket for my friend, and It’s hard to ask for more at this price. 20k, insulation, comfy and excellent fit. He said It’s nice not having the zipper rub on your chin all day, he hasn’t ever gotten wet, and he’s a pretty tall dude and the XL still fits him great. Bang for your buck this jacket has your back!

Great Jacket great for all conditions!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I had this Jkt a couple years ago and wore it for everything from Resort riding to Snowmobiling to Backcountry hiking and Splitboarding. It has a great fit and feels super windproof on those nasty days! I love the Hybrid shell with minimal insulation story. It's like a shell so it's breathable when I'm working hard but it's also warm too with those strategically placed insulation panels around my core!! That Stretch fabric is super nice and adds for a great fit and extra range of motion when active. It has a great Pocket system for all my stuff and that new added lip balm pocket is Rad! Mine was still in great shape after 2 years so I just gave it to my brother, he's been wearing it and Loves it!

        Hydra Jacket

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: large
        • Height: 6'0"
        • Weight: 150lbs

The Hydra Jacket is a great jacket. I love the Thermograph insulation system. The jacket is a shell with insulation placed in the areas where you need it. I also like the asymmetrical front zipper. It doesn't rub on my chin.
The fit is great, true to size. Plenty of room for a layer if needed.
