Why We Like The Marmot Alpinist GORE-TEX Jacket

Built for the most severe alpine conditions, the Marmot Alpinist GORE-TEX Jacket leverages waterproof, breathable technology to secure its spot as our favorite go-to for days breaking trail or chasing skin tracks. The GORE-TEX Pro construction is not only here to keep us dry anytime the storm clouds gather, but also help reduce our impact on the planet with a fully recycled design. And when the temps drop, we pull up the attached hood and adjust the drawcord hem for extra coverage while on the move.

Hudson Trail outfitters

Purchased the Alpinist in 1998. Only used it for fly fishing, back packing, mountaineering, snowshoe camping, and occasionally while cleaning out overflowing gutters in a downpour. its still looks new, and it works great. This is a fantastic jacket that still continues to preform. The fit is fantastic, and the hood works well. The ergonomics being able to move with jacket rise, or compromising dryness, huge pitzips for ventilation, reinforced shoulders for packs, easy access pockets. just a great design. Hopefully they did'nt change it!

Check the Size Chart!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m always a size large, having a 41” chest and relatively broad shoulders, but I’m swimming in this jacket, which is a large. I should have checked the size chart and ordered a medium. The jacket seems very good from a first impression.

Alpinist Jacket - they made it worse...

I have had Marmot Alpinist Jackets for decades and this is my first review as I'm pretty bummed about this jacket. Their warranty service is excellent to this day, even through all the acquisitions so props there. The older (say 2 yrs ago version and earlier) Alpinist was perfect. Gore Tex pro, great pockets, (4 pockets on outside, 2 high, 2 low, could access them with a pack + pass pocket + interior zippered and an interior mesh) The main change that this one makes is regarding pockets. The chest pocket where most of us put our phone is now sorta hidden and much harder to access. No ski pass pocket on the arm that was super useful. If I remember right, no zippered interior pocket. It's gotten shorter, lighter, and less durable as well. It's a better touring jacket for those that want something lighter, but thats it. I had lighter jackets than this for touring so liked the more full featured, more durable older version.

Marmot Alpinist Jacket

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought my first Marmot jacket when I was in Andorra in the early 90's. This jacket is super durable considering the time that I have been using it for all sorts of outdoor activities like mountaineering, climbing, skiing, and hiking. Now, I have purchased this new Marmot Alpinist jacket and I am going to use it on a trip to the Pyrenees. It looks like it's very well made and I have had great experiences with the Gore Tex fabric. So, I am ready to start enjoying new adventures with it.

I love this jacket, works well for rain or cold

This jacket is very light and is designed so well. It keeps my completely dry, and is a great shell to layer over outerwear so you can wear it on cold days to block wind (does a great job there too). The pit zips are a little difficult to zip upward (wish it were downward, would be easier to pull), but that is how Marmot seem to make their jackets, and it's great to have them because they accomplish the purpose. I've already worn this with temps up into the low 60's, and thanks to the pit zips, no issue managing body temperature. I don't ski, but believe this would work very well because it zips and seals up tight, breathes to keep you comfortable, and I've thrown it in the washing machine a couple of times in the first two months, no issues with outside moisture and staying dry. I bought a XXL to allow for heavy layering, wish now that I had bought one size smaller, but the jacket still keeps my dry even as roomy as it is. This is my 2nd Marmot jacket, and I buy another, I would buy Marmot because they are made very well.

Disappointed

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the jacket - gore-tex is effective and the fit/features are appropriate. Jacket will stand up to harsh conditions. However after just 4 uses the zipper has broken and rendered the jacket useless. Looking towards Marmot for warranty/repair and turnaround appears to be 14-16 weeks. Now I am left jacketless after very limited use despite purchasing the flagship model such a short time ago. That long without a jacket is all but the entirety of the winter season. Disappointed with build quality/durability and am bummed that I’ll have to find another way to get through the season. Anyone trying to get rid of old jacket so I don’t have to spend more $$$

Repair option?

Mostly I like it except the small plastic piece at the end of the hood draw cord came off the second time I wore it. I’m hoping that’s not an indication of the overall quality. Is there a way to get it repaired?

Good quality but fit and design could be improved.

This is my shell for winter sports. The material and construction quality are top notch. My complaint is the fit. Like most of the big outdoor clothing companies, marmot makes their clothes for tall skinny people. This parka's girth around the chest does not match the length of the sleeves or the length of the parka itself. My biggest complaint is the tight arm pits. The angle that forms the armpit is very abrupt and too acute. I have to unzip the pit zips for it to be comfortable and I'm not that big of a guy, 5' 10" and 190 lbs and the parka is an XL. Another complaint is that the pit zips zip away from each other instead of toward each other as they're supposed to.
