    Next time you're out on your local trail system, keep an eye peeled and you'll notice way more than your fair share of Maxxis Ardent Tires on trail and XC bikes. That's not an accident. The Ardent is Maxxis' most versatile, and arguably most popular, tire, with two widths to suit all riding styles and a design that's equal parts fast rolling, grippy, and durable.

    All-mountain riders looking for extra traction would do well to mount up the 2.4in option, while those who want more rolling speed should go for the 2.25in width. Don't get confused, though; both options boast ramped center knobs to decrease rolling resistance and improve braking, and both have blocky side knobs that serve up tons of grip when you lay your bike over into a turn. The Ardent also uses Maxxis' EXO sidewall protection to fight off pinch flats and punctures, and it features Lightweight Ultimate Sidewall Technology (LUST), an extra rubber compound that makes the tire less permeable and therefore less susceptible to leaks. It's also set up to run tubeless, so you can ditch the annoying tubes and run lower pressures, which equates to better grip.

    Ardent!

      I have run this tire on a few bikes over the years, and this is a fresh one to replace the Ardent I shredded last fall. It is currently one of the tires I use for mellower trail riding. This tire is awesome for hard-packed trail riding and desert terrain. It offers a nice combination of rolling efficiency and traction at a reasonable weight. Setting it up tubeless was a 'snap' with compatible rims. Its a good do-all tire for trail riding that rolls better than a Minion DHR or similar tires. That said, on softer trail surfaces its easy to break traction with this tire - with or without using the back brake. It is also not suited for more aggressive downhill/enduro riding - sharp rocks, high speed, and large impacts will destroy this tire.

      Perfect rear tire

      Pair this one with a high roller 2 in the front, and this has been the ideal tire setup for my trail bike for the past 3 seasons. Great rolling resistance, and enough grip with a really predictable break point, so I know when the tire is going to break free and I can skid the back end of the bike around where I want to.

      EXO sidewall protection is awesome, and rubber durability is some of the best I've seen.

      Good all around tire

      Replaced the Icons on my wife's bike with these. She loves them. They roll effortlessly and have great braking and cornering control. Easy to set up tubeless and tread wears well.

      Good Tire

      I've been using this as my rear tire for a couple months now and have been pleased with it. First off - it was very easy to install tubeless with a floor pump. As for riding - it offers great speed and traction while climbing. But, in fast corners, it does seem to kick-out more often than I would like.

      Fast Roller

      Great, fast rolling tire for dry/hard conditions. Pairs well with a high roller up front. Not the most aggressive cornering tire, but is definitely a fast roller.

      My Favorite Tire

      This is my all-time favorite tire. I run the 2.4s front and back. I'm super impressed with the low rolling resistance and incredible traction. I've put so many miles on mine, and they still look great. Whether I'm riding Moab, St. George, or the Wasatch, these are my go-to tires.

      Great Sedona Tires

      These tires are great for hitting the trails out here! I've put roughly 45-50 miles on them so far and I must say they grip and roll right over all the loose rock. We recently had some rains out here as well and they did better than expected on the wet slick rock, roots and off camber rock gardens. A little slick in the mud but what do you expect, it's mud. 2015 Pitch Comp 27.5x2.4 Front to back.

      I've put about 600 miles on my Juliana Furtado this summer, that back tire needed some new rubber! Replaced the old Ardent with the new and I'm back out rippin and a rollin' again!

      Great tire for pedaling uphill and ripping downhill. Not much else you need to know.

      I bought this tire to replace the Ikon on my rear wheel of my Yeti SB5. I wanted something with more aggressive tread, but that would still roll and climb without too much extra resistance. So far, the Ardent is living up to all of my wishes! I've been able to corner more confidently and I haven't felt any slower on the climbs, and in Crested Butte, we have a TON of climbing.

      2.25 Not great for aggressive riding

      The 2.25 came as rear tire on Santa Cruz 5010, ran tubeless on WTB ST 23 mm rim. Worked well for climbing and light descending. For anything more aggressive, even railing berms and small jumps it's totally squirmy at anything under 35psi, soft sidewalls roll over easily. took it to Big Bear (nothing gnar) and burped it hopping a 1ft roller (at 30 psi) and then tore a hole at a side lug at pretty low speed. I ordered a High Roller II dual compound to run instead, which I have on the front and has worked great.

      Great tire for dry/hard conditions, decent in slick. I rode it on both coasts in tons of conditions and got reliable traction on all but the dustiest or rootiest and damp trails. A really great offering from Maxxis.

      2.4 NOT 2.4 in 27.5

      This is not Competitive Cyclist's fault at all but Maxxis uses the same 2.25 casing for both the 2.25 AND the 2.4. 2.4 measures out to 2.27 wide and only 2.17 tall on a 28mm internal width rim. Only difference between 2.25 and 2.4 is knob height. For comparison, 26x2.4" measures 2.39 wide by 2.37 tall. I went to 4 LBS and measured 10+ samples, all were the same width casing within .16". Very disappointed as the 26x2.4 has been my go-to front tire for many years. Who knows, maybe it was just a bad run and it's just what everyone has right now?

      The Dark Horse

      You might count the Ardent out for a lot of uses, especially if you're like me and only had experience with the 2.25 version. I loved the 2.25 for a rear tire for XC/trail riding, but didn't trust it for much more than that and certainly wouldn't consider putting it on the front with those tiny cornering knobs.

      Then about a year ago I saw the 2.4 in the flesh and was blown away at how different it was. Not just wider, but MUCH beefier tread. This season I satisfied my curiosity, and rolled the dice on running 2.4 Ardents front and rear. So far I've ridden them in mostly dry conditions semi-packed/semi-loose. No real mud to speak of, but I don't anticipate them being good mud tires. In the dry conditions though they have been great so far! They roll fast and they corner very predictably. They don't necessarily have the bit that the High Roller II and Minion DHF have, but what they lack in bite I feel they make up for in predictability.

      I'll chime back in after more riding as I'm still very unsure which I actually prefer between the myriad of awesome all mountain tires Maxxis offers, but these are certainly a contender. If durability is on par with the slightly heavier HR IIs I had last season then I anticipate riding these tires for a while.

      If you care, I have them mounted on Reynolds AM carbon wheels on a SC nomad. The other maxxis tires I've ridden have been on comparable bikes.

      Update: I have vetted these more thoroughly. Still LOVE them and keeping them on my bike, but I have found where they start to meet their match. In super loose sand/gravel they definitely do not have the bit of the heavier duty maxxis offerings. Basically, exactly what you would expect. I still find that they have enough grip though and they are very predictable so I have not been let down ever. The other scenario where they come up short is braking on super steep/loose DH trails. Again a pretty obvious weakness that you could probably guess just looking at them online. Having found these boundaries, I'm still super happy with the 2.4 for all-around trail use. If you do a lot of shuttle/lift riding and need grip more than speed then I would look to the high rollers or minions, but if you pedal all the vert that you descend these are a very worthy tire.
