The full side zips let you easily pull the Spire on and off without even removing your boots, and allow you to vent the pants when things start to get toasty. A Cordura scuff guard protects each hem from your edges or crampons (whatever the tool of the day may be) while the gaiters ensure no snow can sneak up your legs.
