Breathable warmth and weather resistance with the Coefficient Storm Hoody
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This hoody has been my go-to for everything from backcountry touring to brisk morning hikes. It’s super breathable but still blocks wind and sheds light weather. The waffle fleece interior feels great over a base layer, and it layers under a shell without bulk."
When we're out chasing cold starts or exposed ridgelines, the Black Diamond Coefficient Storm Hoody keeps us warm and moving. Designed as a do-it-all alpine midlayer, it blends breathable insulation with wind and water resistance for unpredictable mountain conditions.
The gridded fleece interior traps heat while still letting moisture escape, and the stretchy outer fabric moves with us whether we’re skinning, scrambling, or hauling gear. It even packs into its own pocket with a loop for clipping to our harness or pack. Lightweight, versatile, and weather-ready, this layer works just as well on alpine starts as it does for coffee in town after.

Could be great but falls a little short
I had high hopes for this jacket given the amount of 5 star reviews but it falls a little short. The biggest complaint are the wrist cuffs. . . they are flat, no taper, no elastic, nothing to them. 5 stars for not having thumb holes. I can't stand thumb holes and every other jacket has them but this is an active sport jacket it at least needs elastic wrist cuffs. The sleeves flop around and sag past my hands because there is literally nothing to the cuffs like flat, open pant cuffs. I'm going to take my jacket to a local seamstress to get a simple elastic cuff sewn in. That would make it a 5 star jacket. After only 3 weeks of wear, the front chest and shoulder are piling pretty badly. Most likely from my truck seat belt. Other than that, I have used several other brands jackets that are similar and this one is a great weight, breathes but also has some weather protection, fit is not super fitted and I can wear a heavy base layer underneath without restriction. 5'7", 165 and the medium fits plenty big. Size down if you like a slim, tapered fit.

Coefficient Storm Hoody
Very nice jacket that appears to be well made. Have used it only once on a ski tour this spring over a Smartwool base layer and unzipped, I didn’t overheat. I’m about 5’9” and 170#…the M jacket fits well except the arms which are too long. So far so good!

Poufter Purple CoEf Storm Hoody
Love this waffle-back hoody. Gorgeous color. Nice pockets I'm 5'8" 140lbs and I got the small~ it's patterned trim, it seems, and the hood fit is juuust right with or without a hat or beanie. I just use it casually around town and for bouldering in the foothils (7,500') over a T-shirt and/or under various shells or trim-fitting puffys. My performance-fit (small) Factor Hoody is more suited for technical applications than the CoEf Storm, which is WAY more fun, by far!! The "Poufter Purple" color goes great with the biG white goggle-eyed Oakley Clifdens and 80s vintage Vuarnet 028s I like to wear.

In one word: versatile!
Blocks enough wind, sheds enough rain, and provides enough insulation to use as an outer layer for cool weather aerobic pursuits in the PNW; breathes well enough to use as a colder-weather midlayer under a hardshell. I prefer wool as a next-to-skin layer, but this one doesn't feel clammy worn over a short-sleeve tee. I'm very happy with this hoody, and it quickly found its place in my rotation. I'm consistently a large in Black Diamond jackets, but I wish this was cut a bit trimmer. Five stars otherwise. If I was ordering again, I might have tried the medium and hoped the sleeves were long enough.

Great Feel! 👍
The hoody fits well and has a great feel. I wish it had thumb holes and was a slimmer fit, but otherwise is a great hoody.

Nice material
It’s a great hoodie, but will return for medium - small is too small if wearing clothes underneath. Love it and love the color

Big-headed hoody
Got this at a good Black Friday/Week/Month sale price for active use (backpacking) in cool to cold temperatures. Although the product page gives the name of this jacket as, "Men's Coefficient Storm Hoody, " it appeared on my invoice as, "Men's Coefficient Storm FZ Hoody. " I got a large in the "Octane" (red) color. … For reference, i'm 6 ft. 0. 5 inches, 190 pounds, 44-inch chest, 36-inch+ waist, torso length 20. 5 inches for fitting backpacks. Few extra pounds around the waist. … Opening the package, i thought, "Yeah, this is the right jacket!" It's got a smooth outer face that seems like it might be fairly snag resistant. Gridded interior fleece. Roomy chest and hand pockets with a mesh lining material that seems pretty sturdy. Zippers work smoothly. Seems well made; no errant stitches or thread ends. Nice amount of stretch to the fabric. Bottom of the jacket falls about two inches below the bottom of my pants belt. Wouldn't mind if it were an inch or so longer. Sleeves fall to mid-palm, so they could be two inches shorter, but i could live with it. I'd call the fabric lightweight; about a 100-weight fleece. Seems like it would offer minimal wind protection and dry pretty quickly if wet—pretty much what i was looking for. … The deal killer, though, is the hood, which was a big part of why i got this. I have a similar jacket from The North Face that i like, but it has no hood. And their hooded fleece jackets have no hand pockets. The hood on this is comically large. The front literally comes down fully over my eyes. There is elastic around the perimeter, but no way to make an adjustment. You'd pretty much have to wear a helmet with this, or have a watermelon-sized noggin. Not sure why none of the other reviews mention this. … Sadly, i'll be returning this jacket.

Fits true to size
being a jacket, if is slightly roomier for layers underneath. Great for temps as a standalone 30f-50f. With layers underneath its works for 15-30F temps. Great jacket. Good for daily use.
