Why We Like The Barbour Bedale Wax Jacket
Originally created in 1980 for equestrian pursuits, the Barbour Bedale Wax Jacket exudes classic British sensibilities with its waxed cotton exterior, ring-pull zipper, and Stormfly front closure. Its shorter length, tailored fit, and rear vents reflect its equestrian heritage, with a six-ounce waxed cotton exterior for protection in damp maritime environments. The corduroy collar provides smooth-wearing sophistication, with external snaps for attaching an optional hood.

Excellent Jacket
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- 40
I actually had to buy, return, and rebuy several times trying to find my right size. Backcountry honored the return each time, and I’m happy to say I finally got a jacket in my size. It’s an excellent jacket. I have Barbour from 20 years ago I absolutely love. I haven’t gotten to break this one in yet on account of the summer weather, but I’m certain it’s no lesser in quality from the one I’ve been wearing. For anyone curious, I’m 6”2, 200lbs, and about 20% body fat. The size 40 fits me perfectly.

Right As Rain
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Size Bought:
- 40
- Height:
- 5' 9"
- Weight:
- 165
I purchased one of these on sale as a birthday gift for myself to replace a 10-year old Barbour Sapper rain jacket. Unlike the Sapper, this jacket is (1) made in UK and (2) runs by chest size, not S,M,L,XL. Immediately upon opening the package, I could feel the high quality construction in the jacket. The waxed cotton was, indeed, waxy, almost greasy feeling. The way the jacket rests on you feels sturdy and well-made. From what I had read beforehand, choosing the right size is the trickiest part with these jackets. However, I went with usual (not true) size and had no issues. My chest size is 38, but I typically buy one size up for coats (to consider having a bit of room for layering, as I tend to wear these jackets in the colder months). At 5' 9" and 165 pounds, with an athletic build, the 40 was just right for me.
