Whether your adventure of choice includes rolling miles of gravel farm roads, hard-packed singletrack, dusty desert fire roads, or just a random mix of terrain, the WTB Nano TCS Light FR Clincher Tire has it covered. Although it's billed as a cyclocross tire, the 40mm width limits its utility for racing and we think this tire really shines while exploring the wild on off-road terrain. With a tread pattern that looks a bit like a miniaturized version of a hard-gripping trail tire, this tire provides sure grip on loose surfaces while its Dual DNA compound makes for a smooth, durable ride.
What makes the Nano the legend it is comes down to that innovative tread pattern. One glance and you can see that it's unlike anything else. The center is made from a fast-rolling 60 durometer compound with a slightly elevated rib to maintain virtually constant contact with the ground, which makes keeping speed over hardpack or even pavement a breeze. Move toward the shoulders, however, and you'll find a softer, grippy, 50 durometer compound with pronounced, staggered rectangular knobs that bite hard into looser terrain to enable controlled cornering and responsive braking. The high-volume casing and relatively square profile equate to a smooth yet efficient ride.

These things are sweet. They're grippy on dirt, roll fairly fast on pavement, and they'll shrug off some serious hits without flatting. It was painless setting them up tubeless on WTB i19 Asym rims with one layer of Gorilla tape. They're not the longest lasting tire, and the 40mm size will be too big for most race-focused 'cross bikes, but they're absolutely worth running if they suit your intended use.
Fast CX tire with good grip in the sand

I was looking for a CX tire for the sand/hardpack conditions here in SoCal. I had used the Kenda Happy Mediums (700x40) in the past and liked them, but wanted a tubeless setup. I had heard positive things about the WTB Nanos. These were my first WTB tires, since my "old" 26" Velociraptors.
I installed these tires on Stan's Iron Cross wheels with 1 strip of tape and about 2 ozs of sealant per tire. I used the regular Stan's method, and got the beads to seat right away with just soapy water and a pancake compressor. After adding the sealant, it took a few rounds of shaking and spinning to get them to hold air overnight. Now, they hold air perfectly for days.
I've done a few rides on these now, and absolutely love them. I run them at about 35 PSI (I'm about 155 lbs) and they feel like tubular CX tires. They're fairly fast on the road, but shine in sandy conditions. I've also ridden a decent amount of singletrack on them and they hold the corners well. I've attached a photo of them on a recent ride past the original M.A.S.H. TV set near Malibu Creek SP.
Overall, a great CX tire for adventure/gravel rides!
Thoughts on these as "monster cross" tires on 29" rims? Can't find any fit issues...am I missing anything (not planning to run them tubeless at first)
