Warmth even when it's wet.
Fever dreams of distant summits, dancing visions of giant alpine walls, and haunting images of towering icefalls can keep you up at night, but you'll never have the chance to chase untamed beauty and explore your limits if you simply don't do it. So, when you've reached that fork in the road, the only way to satisfy your restless urges is to pack up all your gear, send some late-night, "I've enjoyed my time here, but..." emails, and head off in search of wild adventure. It's too soon to know just where you'll go and what you'll do, but the one certainty is that you'll have The North Face Summit L4 Men's Jacket right there with you.
The technical, alpine-oriented Summit Series has been around since 2000, but after a brief hiatus, it returned with a vengeance—and this year it's back for a second round and is better (and wiser) than ever. The new Summit Series consists of a full six-piece kit, from the L1 baselayers to the L6 Jacket, and is designed to provide ultimate protection, mobility, and functionality in places where you demand ultimate weather protection and light weight gear. The L4 is an insulating jacket that's lighter and more weather-resistant than the L6 but tougher than the L3, so it's perfect to wear as an outer layer when it's chilly and soggy. Instead of down, The North Face filled the L4 with PrimaLoft ThermoBall, synthetic insulation that packs down small and stays warm even when it gets wet, so snowstorms and misty mornings won't have you shivering.
Outer layers have to be tough, so the North Face outfitted the L4 with a tenacious mini-ripstop fabric that provides the ultimate in durability, while the stretch paneling not only provides unimpeded mobility, but offers low-profile temperature regulation—meaning you don't have to shed excess layers in order to acquire some semblance of comfort. The L4 is cut with an articulated pattern for full mobility, and sports other details like low-profile cuffs and a brimless hood for smooth layering. The high front collar and hidden hem cinch keep drafts from sneaking into your jacket while you're sussing out beta or swinging your way up some alpine ice, and the harness-compatible pockets keep all your high-elevation essentials right where you can reach them.
