The North Face constructed the Freedom Insulated Pant with a regular fit that's equally as at home in the backcountry as it is in the terrain park. A waterproof and breathable DryVent shell serves up protection from wintry conditions of all kinds while a layer of synthetic insulation ensures you stay warm through storm conditions. However, when the sun comes out to play, the Chimney Vent cooling system funnels air from the gaiters to the inner thigh vents to keep you comfortable all day long. And, to round things out, The North Face equipped this pant with reinforced kick-patches and edge guards to assure added protection from sharp ski or board edges to keep the pant in top shape season after season.

Honestly had a hard time deciding between these and the Backcountry Girdwood pants. These are really solid, feel nice, have good features, and will probably last forever like most North face items. However, the waist was just too tight and the leg openings were MASSIVE bell-bottom style. Apart from that they were just too long even though I got the S/Reg size. For reference I normally wear a 31/32 pant. If you're looking for a really great pant at an awesome price, these are probably your best bet. But If you can bring yourself to spend just a little more, you can probably get a much better fitting, more feature filled pant like the Backcountry Girdwood.

As a kid, my parents couldn't afford snow pants. However, we lived in northern Montana where we regularly played outside in -20F weather. We simply put on lots of layers. That system of long johns plus pajamas plus jeans served my childhood well. As an adult, I discovered non-waffle thermal underwear increased ease of motion, and old wool dress slacks served better than jeans for maintaining dryness and flexibility. Thus I poo-pooed insulated pants. Then one of my lower legs was amputated due to an infection. And I got a microprocessor-controlled knee system that needed to stay dry and warmer than 20 F. Thus the need for good insulation and dryness arose. But my thigh, if exercised, sweats so much that I need to take off the prosthesis and dump out the collected perspiration. So I looked for thigh vents. These pants have good insulation, good wetness protection, and thigh ventilation. Mission accomplished! A word about ventilation because it is important to me since I sweat easily. The outer layer needs to breathe well or be easily removed. I prefer a jacket with vents. Indeed, my current jacket of choice has venting zippers at the armpits and lower back. What a difference maker they are! Back to these pants: I was surprised to discover that the pants are also comfortable. Plus, if they stay up on the waste, they deliver good flexibility. There is where I subtract one star: the pants don't stay up well unless I add suspenders. In fairness to the most likely users of these pants, you are probably neither obese nor aging - as am I. You probably don't have a frog but; however, I do. These pants might do just fine on your waist. This is a long-winded review to say that I am converted to good snow pants. And I like this design.

Great snow pants for any winter sports. They keep me warm all day on the slopes even with minimal layering. The material keeps moisture out and the ventilated zippers in the crotch are great for getting rid of excess heat on warmer days. The pants aren't bulky nor slim fit but rather what you would expect from an insulated snow pant. They allow room for layering underneath but hardly look "bulky." I am 6'3, 170 pounds and the Medium Long fits perfect.

Absolutely enormous.
These pants are huge. Why would insulated pants have so much extra room for layering?? Yuuuuge.

Just got these on a great deal but had to return. Insulation is nice and color is a mid gray, which was great. Overall short length was perfect. Pants were slightly big for me in waist. These are on the baggy side, so even with side tabs pulled in was just a bit too big. Would have exchanged for M, but none in stock. I'm use to a more snug fit so it could have been me. I'm a 34-35 waist.

Skiing mostly in Michigan you have lots of time spent on chair lifts. These pants work for me. Good fit and after 2 days of skiing are warm and comfortable. Temperature's have been in the mid to high 20's and with a good base layer under the pants has kept me toasty while standing in the lift lines and tailgating at the car. No complaints on the ski runs either. Pockets have room for my essential stuff and feel secure. So far they have lived up to the other reviews and ratings, Purchasing thru Backcountry was painless and delivery was great during this crazy holiday season.

Great pants for snowboarding or skiing. I?ve worn them on days where temps were in the negatives on the slopes and my legs have never gotten cold. I?ve wiped out more times than I like to mention but these pants have no rips, tears or scuffs. Highly recommended product!
