Stiff is a board, light as a feather.

Hammering up steep climbs may not be a favorite past time of every mountain biker out there, but there are some of us who live for them. There is a certain frustration that even the climb-loving riders encounter, and it stems from soft and flexible shoes giving out when you're dancing on your toes to power up through a steep and bouldery section of trail, causing a total collapse of power that has you spinning backwards to try to catch yourself. Fortunately, Sidi has a knack for getting us covered with stiff soles, and the Sidi Trace Cycling Shoe doesn't fall short of that, with the new MTB RS17 sole that increases stiffness without adding weight to the mix, so you can hammer out the climbs, and push to the podium on race day without flex and give that leaves you feeling squirly on the pedals.

The new MTB RS17 sole is lighter than previous SIDI MTB Soles, with a stiff nylon construction that features targeted polyurethane inserts to elevate stiffness. The sole shape is tapered specifically for mountain biking, with a little extra width in the forefoot, and assorted lugs for reliable grip when you're on foot. The toe area uses a replaceable tread, since it's the area most prone to wear and tear, and also features the ability to mount crampons, so you can elevate your grip when you hit the local cyclocross race and encounter more than just a smattering of mud.

Wrapping your foot up snugly on top is Sidi's Politex material —a burly fabric constructed by overlapping several layers of different materials, harnessing their strengths into one piece, and compacting PVC to the layers for a smooth, long lasting finish. Politex is film dyed, ensuring longer lasting color that won't fade after a summer in the sun, so your kicks stay as fresh as the day you bought them. Politex fabric is designed to resist laceration, ripping, stretching, and fading, and even hits the marks for European Green Standards, ensuring that the product is totally green, and less harmful to the environment where we spin our legs.

Topping it all off, your feet will stay secure thanks to the two hook-and-loop straps that secure your toe and arch, plus a reliable Tecno-3 buckle up top that cinches down millimeter by millimeter to dial in the perfect fit for you. The Tecno-3 system involves two ratcheting dials, Sidi's proprietary, non-stretch wire, and a customizable fit at the instep and forefoot. The heel locks your ankle into place, too, with its Tallone Sidi heel cup, that reinforces the area with protection from trail debris, and prevents deformation from extreme riding or prolonged pressure.

    • A stiff cycling shoe that won't falter on the trail
    • Upgraded MTB sole with PU increases stiffness
    • Just enough flex for hiking a bike when necessary
    • Politex materials is durable and stands up to trail debris
    • Hook-and-loop and Tecno-3 closures cinch into the perfect fit
    • Lock your heel in place with reinforced heel cup
    • Replaceable toe lugs prolong shoe life
    • Crampon compatible for muddy CX race days

Not sized the same as Genius

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 45
    • Height: 5'11"
    • Weight: 155lbs

Having worn size 45 Sidi Genius shoes for several years, I bought a pair of Sidi Trace size 45 expecting them to fit the same as the Genius shoes. Unfortunately they were slightly larger, allowing my foot to shift in the shoes and causing a great deal of pain in my feet. Changing to size 44.5 fixed the problem.

The picture shoes my feet after just three days (200 miles) of wearing the size 45 Trace.

    Great fit nice looking shoe

    • Fit: True to size

I really loved these right out of the box. I use them for road and gravel bikes. The shoes are a bit heavy, but that is not a problem for me and I love the BOA closure system.

    Great All Round

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 43
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 200lbs

Over the years, my riding has evolved from straight road to a combo of pavement, gravel, dirt, bike path, etc. So when it came time to replace my old road Sidi's, I went with these as "All Round" shoe. They're comfortable and meet my price point. Based previous Sidi experience, I expect them to last a number of years.

    Comfortable shoes, a few issues

I bought the women's and men's versions to see which fit better. I kept the men's as they have a considerably roomier toe box despite same length as women's (I'm a woman). Things I really like: I like the 3 way adjustment - I've found two Boa systems don't allow enough custimization across 3 regions of foot; I like the "boa-like" dial system in some ways better than a Boa - it allows micro adjustments both tighter AND one-click looser; these are comfy and close fitting around heel and stay on feet during hike-a-bike - should work well for CX as well as XC; the bright yellow is cool! Things I don't like: the shoe (not tongue) jabs me a little bit in the ankle - not bad enough to be a huge issue; where the tongue cover attaches on the inside of the foot sticks out enough that it can rub on the crank - this is a bad design; the crank handle on the tightening dial is small and hard to see and would hard to find/crank while on the bike (but can loosen easily on the bike) - that should be redesigned to be easier to find/flip up on the fly in a long race.

Overall, after trying on about 5 pairs of different shoes, these are going to work best for me and I'll be keeping them.

Like them so much...bought them again

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Overall great shoe. I use them for MTV and they are great on the bike, but not as functional if forced to hike a bike. Fits true to size, great adjustability and not too heavy. One of the best on the bike shoes..2nd pair I have owned.

      high quality at great price

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use these primarily for BMX racing. stiffness is descent and I like the separate boa and velcro straps for getting the perfect fit.
