    From trail to trail.

Whether you're cruising through a muddy Chautauqua Park mid spring or wandering through a dusty and barren Moab, the Salomon Men's X Ultra Mid Aero Hiking Boot is built to trek through the bone dry and the refreshingly uncomfortable conditions. Crafted with a lightweight yet breathable upper, this hiking boot is equipped with a mud guard and a protective heel and toe cap that safeguards your metatarsals while a PU coating helps keep you dry in the event the sky unleashes a thick shield of precipitation. Not to mention, the X Ultra Mid is outfitted with a rugged non-marking ContaGrip as well as an EVA injected midsole and molded shank encourages ample comfort and support, so you can wander further.

    Trail Runner w/ Ankle Support

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 170lbs

Can it get any lighter? These are awesome when it comes to breathability. They breath better than my running shoe (Brooks Glycerin).

Fresh out of the box, I wore them to the airport for Pikes Peak. No break in needed! Most recently I went backpacking in Tuolumne Meadows and logged 40 miles between four days, with some at a jogging pace. Not once did my feet bother me, super comfortable and very surprising!...as my feet constantly hurt from other shoes. My feet stayed dry even during water crossings, although I was careful to pay attention to depths too deep for the contagrip sole and side lip (it can handle about 1.5 inch high water flow against it).

...as previous reviews have indicated, trail sand can enter the boot, but no more than it would from the ankle opening. Hopefully your mama taught you not to drag yo feet.

I did walk up some sandy dunes in Monterey and quickly decided to go barefoot.

Can't wait to pair them with some Darn Tough socks for my next trip. I've probably put on 150 miles so far, and there is still no ware yet.

Oh, one last comment, some sites have reviewers that complain about the top lace hook digging into their ankle when laced up. I felt this slightly when I tried them on with low socks. With socks over the ankle, there is zero discomfort.

Bonus points to BC for a sale price that crushed REI.

    Comfortable but too "aero"

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 10

It is difficult to find a pair of backpacking/hiking boots without GoreTex these days. I backpack in the High Sierras where the summer months are dry and often hot so I wanted breathability over waterproofing. The Aero version delivers on that front as they are much cooler than my older Goretex hiking boots. The fabric portion is so breathable you can actually see the sun light on the inside the boot when you take them off. Unfortunately this is a feature that also makes them less desirable. The trails in the Sierras have a fine, powder-like sand that easily fits through the Aero fabric. I was constantly taking off the boots to empty the dirt out of my boots. At the end of the day when I took off my socks, my feet were dirt-brown in a pattern that matched the areas of fabric on the boot. Goretex, while marginally hotter, has a membrane that keeps these fine particles out (in addition to water).

Everything else about these boots I loved. 5 days on the JMT with a 45 lbs pack and my feet were comfy (aside from being dirty). Ample toe box (I have Morton's Neuroma so I'm sensitive to narrow shoes), plush tongue, perfect sole flex, and ankle support that still provides mobility. I wear a size 10 in Nike running shoes and a size 10 in these fit perfect with Smartwool light weigh hiking socks.

Long story short, I'll keep this pair for day hiking on fire roads and get the GTX version for High Sierra back packing.

    Good ventilated hiking boot

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 8.5
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I got this for a trip out to Vegas and as a summer boot. They don't fit quite as nicely as my old Salomon Synapse Mids, but the fit is true to size. They are very well ventilated.
The only thing that prevents me from giving this boot 5 stars is that the lacing, if you tuck the padded tongue in, and lace up the boot snugly, the padded tongue creates pressure at the top hooks, which I found uncomfortable. Easy solution is to make sure the padded tongue was not tucked in, but makes the boot feel a bit looser (though still snugly laced), but fine for hiking even with a 15 pound pack. Also excellent for the daily urban trek.
