Down insulation helps your young explorer stay warm throughout his winter exploits.

You look at your little Sir Edmund Hillary and wonder whose genes are responsible for his extremely adventurous nature. In the backyard, he's built his own Mount Everest and is attempting to summit his suburban-sited peak. It's a good thing he's wearing the Marmot Boys Ama Dablam Jacket since current conditions are not favorable for his summit attempt. Ultra-light fabric holds tight to the 700-fill down insulation to keep him warm as winds create a frigid eddy of snow and ice. The Ama Dablam will keep him roasty, toasty warm when he's on an imagined conquest of the Himalayas, waiting for the bus, or getting pummeled in a snowball fight.

The shell consists of ultra-light downproof fabric treated with DWR to help water bead up on the jacket surface. Inside the jacket is 700-fill down, treated with Down Defender. Down, a mix of feathers and plumules, traps air so body heat doesn't escape and cold air doesn't come in. When wet, the feathers collapse in a soggy mess, no longer able to trap air and insulate. Marmot's Down Defender technology helps down retain loft, and thus insulating abilities, when exposed to moisture. Between the DWR finish on the face fabric and Down Defender feathers inside the jacket, your young prince has ample time to seek shelter from an onslaught of wintry weather before falling victim to the cold and wet.

An elastic drawcord hem seals in precious warmth, and a wind flap behind the front zipper makes certain no wind sneaks between zipper teeth. The zipped hand-warmer pockets are lined with soft fabric to help warm you son's paws when he's lost his gloves, or just forgot them, or something like that. He's wearing the Ama Dablam — isn't that enough?

    love it!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My 5 year old loves this jacket! We bought the black XS and it fits him well with room to grow. I love that the zipper works well and is big enough for his hands to grasp and use. It keeps him warm and dry on the playground and the ski hill.

This is the second year in a row I've ordered this jacket because it is the best on the market for everyday use. In light cold (30s to 40s) it works great and breathes well when my son is running around playing. In colder weather (teens and twenties) I put on an additional fleece or wool layer which works to keep him warm but not sweating. He even wears this skiing--again with layering. I won't buy a down kids jacket without a hood--it's a deal breaker for me--so that offers yet another option for warmth: hat with hood, just hat, or hood alone if it suddenly turns windy and he finds himself without a hat. Absolutely fabulous winter jacket for boys: lightweight but super warm, not too bulky or hot for playground fun, but in colder weather not too close fitting that it can't be layered up. Can also be washed without adverse effects.

    Not for the Midwest winters

I bought this jacket thinking that it was thick and puffy because that's the way it looks in the picture. I was disappointed when it arrived. Don't get me wrong, the jacket is adorable but only for 35 degrees or higher. I returned it for the down hooded one and hope that's the one I'm looking for:)

Sorry Peggy, I don't know which one you ordered without a hood, but my son only would wear NF in the winter because he stays very cold. Around three years ago, I switch to Marmot. It's the best thing I ever did. Marmot is much warmer than NF. When it first arrives, it does look pretty flat and doesn't appear that it would be warm. It's filled with 700 down protection which is normally 150 more than North Face jackets and is just as light. My son doesn't care about the name, he's just gotten used to having the warmth and being lightweight. I live in the colder areas of the midwest, and you just can't go wrong with Marmot insulated jackets/with hoods in subzero weather.

    Color question/discrepancies

Just ordered and received these for my boys. I ordered the same color combination for both, but, seems there's a mix up.
Both should be with the green contrast.
The tags seem to be the mix up, as they state the same color info.
Love you guys and have ordered often without any issues.
Unfortunately, I don't have time to resend and exchange for the correct color before we take off and use these on our trip.
Also, my first time ordering Marmont. We've always had the boys wear North face.
Sizing seems to run much smaller in the Marmont, just reference-- xl in Marmont is the same as large in North face, for anyone wondering on size.
