Mojo 3 Carbon GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike
Feeling right at home on any trail, the Ibis Mojo 3 Carbon GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike is a fun-loving ripper of a trail bike that excels both up and down the mountain. With its 5-inches of DW-Link travel and a lightweight yet super stiff chassis, the Mojo 3 punches well above its travel class on descents while exhibiting an eagerness on the climbs rivaled by few others in the 27.5 trail bike category. And with enough clearance for tires ranging from 2.25 - 2.8-inches, you've got a huge range of tread options to surf the dirt any way you want it. These details have made the Mojo 3 a favorite of ours, as well as its grin-inducing playful trail manners, but the striking new Shark Bite and Obsidian Black paint schemes have us falling in love with it all over again.
The Mojo 3's lively ride starts with the shock tune and DW-Link suspension. Ibis claims it tuned the shock so its initial stroke rides on the "plush" side, but our firsthand experience with the bike proves that generous small bump compliance doesn't take away from the fantastic mid-stroke support that had us airing every trail feature in sight and rocketing up steep climbs with splendid agility. The extra mid-stroke support also allows Ibis to give the bike a low bottom bracket height for superior handling without pedal strikes, a nice characteristic that lets you power up technical climbs without constantly banging your pedals on rocks.
It wasn't specifically built as a park bike, but spending a few minutes on it makes it obvious that the Mojo 3 is fully capable of getting rowdy. Ibis describes the shock's tuned ramp-up characteristics as "robust." We describe it as the kind of big-hit confidence that can often be the key element in determining which side of the ragged edge you find yourself on. By outfitting this Mojo 3 with voluminous 2.6in tires, you'll enjoy confident traction and a deeper travel feel than you might expect from other 130mm travel bikes. Regardless of the tires you choose to run, the shock tune and suspension keep the bottom bracket height at the sag point almost the same.
The shock's tune doesn't need to be over-damped either, a fact that Ibis credits to the shock rate and DW-Link's steady pedaling platform. Since it naturally reduces bob without needing a damper handicap from the shock, DW-Link's ramp-up stays smooth throughout its suspension arc. It also suffers less heat build-up than heavily damped models, so its ramp feel isn't significantly affected during hard, fast descents where the shock is working overtime.
The frame itself is what you'd expect from Ibis: a full carbon monocoque design that incorporates the construction pedigree of the HD4 but at a drastic weight savings. Coming in at only 5.5lb with shock for a size medium, the frame is certainly lightweight but it retains an impressive stiffness that responds quickly to rider input and inspires confidence when charging through technical terrain. A 66.8-degree head tube angle paired with a low bottom bracket give the bike plenty of stability on high speed descents, yet the short 16.7in chainstays give the bike playful and nimble handling to keep the fun factor high everywhere else on the trail.
Ibis specs this Mojo 3 with a smart set of components that perform well and reliably, and are worthy of some call outs. SRAM's GX Eagle drivetrain is the workhorse of the Eagle lineup and delivers crisp shifting across the wide range cassette with a 50t bailout gear for exceptionally stiff climbs. You'll probably never drop a chain, and the system operates quietly while shedding mud and debris proficiently. The Fox Performance suspension offers smooth and responsive damping and intuitive adjustments that make it easy to dial in the suspension for your weight and riding style. As for wheels, Ibis specs their in-house 738 aluminum wheels with a wide 34mm internal width that easily supports the full range of the Mojo's 2.25 - 2.8in tire clearance. Lastly, we have to give Ibis kudos for spec'ing a Bike Yoke Revive Dropper post. The Revive is a well-engineered dropper that's built to last and eliminates some of the common causes of dropper post malfunction.
