Great backcountry storm jacket
Great fit and pocket placement. Repelled moisture well. I stayed completely dry while out in a wet sierra storm for about 6 hours.

Perfect shell for getting weird on skis.
Perfect shell for ski mountaineering/touring. Burly material but super light and packs small and has a ton of great, ski specific features. The skin pockets inside are genius, the thumbs loops are prefect and the cut is nice and long. Made for the backcountry but works really well inbounds as well. It does a run a little large so heads up!

Amazing features, cool colors, awful fit
I was so psyched to find all these features in a ski mountaineering-specific shell, but I’m 5’7” / 145 lb and I’m swimming in this thing… will be returning. So disappointed they don’t sell an XS.

My favorite tech shell for ski touring
I’ve gone through quite a few shells over the years in search of a perfect ski tour/mountaineering piece. Typically, shells are either made for the resort or foll alpine climbing. Resort shells are heavy, baggy and lack functionality. Alpine shells tend to be the opposite; too short of a cut, ultra minimalist and not quite enough storage for things like skins. The Viv solves all these problems. The gore-Tex pro material is lightweight and super packable but tough enough that pointy things won’t shred it at first touch. The cut is a bit long which is great for skiing. It has full on skin pockets inside, huge mechanical vents, over the glove thumb loops on the sleeves, a hole for a radio’s mic and a loop by the neck to hold the mic, etc. Just well though out for everything. Even the pockets have elastic bands sewn inside all of them for use of lanyards. Best jacket ever! FYI, it does run a bit large which makes sense; plenty of space for layering, room for skin storage inside, etc. If you want a tailored fit, size down.

My Fav
I've ridden in this for two seasons, and hard to beat its functionality. Not too big, not too slim...

Awesome Shell
I bought a M and I’m 5’9” and 150lbs, the fit is a bit large, so if you want a more athletic fit then size down, skins fit nicely inside the jacket with the built in skin holding feature, vents well while skinning and the jacket doesn’t feel like you are in a sweat box, the lower pockets are nice with a pack waist belt to access, and the upper pockets are roomy, there is some ‘movement noise’ with it, but not noticeable like some pants that I have owned. All around great shell

Designed for the tall and slender
I wanted the best gore-tex shell available, and typically layer for increased warmth. The other shell I was looking at was the Arc'Teryx Beta AR. Overall, the jackets seemed similar in a lot of ways, but I was able to get a better deal on the Mountain Hardwear jacket. I wanted to give this jacket a 3-1/2 star rating due to the fit, but am rating it a 4. I am 5'9" tall and about 175 lbs. I originally ordered a Large so I could put a mid-layer underneath -- and the sleaves were a 3 or 4 inches too long, the length was too long, and it was clearly too large for me. I exchanged it for a medium, which fit much better sleeves and length wise -- but was WAY too restrictive in the chest and arm pit area even without a midlayer. I have no idea why MH would not offer something to fit someone with a slightly more compact build. If you're 6'2" and 160 lbs, this is your jacket. If it was 2-3 inches bigger in the chest and arm pit area, I would give this jacket 5 stars. Unfortunately, I am disappointed with the overall cut and fit of this jacket.

Great Jacket
This is a great jacket. I ordered it in Large. I'm 6'0" and 185 lbs, it was too big even when wearing significant layers underneath. I should have ordered M. Has a lot of very nice features. I was looking for a very bright jacket, like blaze orange. The actual color is not as bright as it appears on the website. It is a very beautiful red tone, but not what I wanted. I returned the large and am still thinking about the M. Mountain Hardware returns are easy.

Thin it to win it...? We shall see...
I expected this jacket to have more material to it, considering the price tag. I will see how it fares in the cold weather out here, but I am a bit skeptical for how thin it is. However, I love the look and color. I’m more new to this kind of material so that’s honestly my only concern.

Love it!
Great jacket. Generous hood will fit any helmet while still allowing freedom of movement. Good length with belay zipper. I could do without the lower pockets, but since they’re there, I use them. 5’9” 150 lbs and a small allows for layers without being too baggy.
