    Fantastic Down Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 180lbs

I put this jacket on this morning for the first time with just a T-shirt on underneath with the temperature outside at 30 degrees and I have to say that I’m impressed. I was skeptical about buying this jacket mostly because of the price but I’m glad now that I made the purchase. I think the jacket looks fantastic and it seems to be very well made. MH makes some great products. I’m 6’1 180. I purchased a large and the fit is perfect. Don’t hesitate just buy it!

    Surprisingly great!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 185lbs

I got this jacket as a replacement for my Patagonia Down Sweater which failed in less than a year of light use. I took a chance as I had no€™t read much about this MH jacket, but it has really surprised me. Everybody is different, which is why you see both positive and negative reviews, but for me this jacket just works. I'€™m 6', 185 lbs and the large fits perfectly. Much more tailored fit than the Patagonia. Materials are nice and seem to be made to withstand a little more abuse. It'€™s heavier than the down sweater, but not noticeable when it's on. It doesn't pack down as well as others in this class, but I don't plan to jam it in a pack very often.
As for warmth, this jacket feels much warmer than the Down Sweater ever did. It's even warm in a strong wind and light precip. The stretchy material adds so much comfort to an already solid package. This is my new go to jacket for almost everything!

    Complete Flop in design

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I wanted to love this jacket and bought it in July on sale just because it felt comfy and looked really neat. I am a gearhead and mtn hardwear has a lot of good stuff, but a couple of flops. This is one of them.
    Not Warm, fit is terrible
This year it looks like they solved the issues with last year's model in terms of the welded baffles. Last year the weld were huge! This created giant cold spots. The jacket feels "ventilated" because it is! That's not where the problems stop!
I'm 6'2" tall and narrow shouldered at 160 lbs. I bought a large and the underarms bind, the sleeves are short and the collar is wayyyy too tight to wear anything underneath like a fleece, or even a very thin fleece. The collar is also very low, too low in my opinion. The hood really needs some sort of adjustment as well. Any wind and it's gone without a helmet or very large hat on. Overall extremely disappointed, but I bought it on sale in July, so I can't return it now! I wish Mountain Hardwear would just take it back and exchange the completely faulty design with a new version where hopefully they fixed the extremely lackluster performance for how bulky it is. I have a lot of jackets and am kind of a gearhead. That said they have other good items and I have other items of theirs, but this one is a failure. Complete failure. If you "run warm" and have a ridiculously skinny neck and a large melon head this will work for you (I just pictured that, and boy that neck must be strong!). Otherwise forget it. I didn't purchase on backcountry, but I wanted everyone to know the HUGE drawbacks with this jacket.

    Want one for myself!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: Runs small

I think this jacket is incredible. I bought this for a gift, but I'd love to have one of my own. The stretch makes this one of the most comfortable jackets I've every seen. Think lightweight softshell with the warmth of down.

    Game changer

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 158lbs

This jacket has noticeably more stretch than the other Stretchdown offerings. At first glance, I thought the new-look was for show (it looks damn good) ; but it seems to be made secondary to increased technical down warmth and design improvements. Keep in mind: This is a fairly heavy, puffy jacket that is probably better as a stand-alone than a mid-layer due to its heat (and moisture) retaining properties. Put a shell over this, and you will be bulletproof against the cold! WARNING: It does NOT fit true to size!!! It is literally the only jacket I have ever bought in a large size, as the medium surprised me as being very tight in the arms and shoulders.

    Perfect Just Got Better

MHW took a great jacket and simply improved it. I did not think there could be any improvements made, but they did. When I first saw the DS, I was not a huge fan of the look. The new pattern on it was not too appealing at first, but then I realized it was designed for a specific reason. The new pattern allows it to compress down even smaller than the original StretchDown jackets. Therefore, now you have all the benefits of the StretchDown jacket with even more compressibility. I definitely recommend this jacket. I found it to be true to size.

Feel free to reach directly out to me for any questions about this jacket or your next big expedition trek!

How does it seem to fit across the chest? I have MH Thermostatic jacket (in a small) from 2012/2013, that has gotten a bit tight across the chest; not as noticeable around town, but definitely when on the trail with a pack on. I remember looking at the medium, but the problem was the torso would have just been way too big.
I'm looking to upgrade, and I'm trying to decide between the hooded DS, the RS and the Ghost Whisper.

      Jeff,
I have the Hooded Ghost Whisperer in an XL. I am 5'10" and last winter weighed 236 lbs, heavy but athletic build. It fit with room to layer a base and light hoody, I usually went with a BD CoEfficient Hoody and it was not too tight. I could also get an XL Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonic over it for waterproofing. I am now just under 200 lbs and I find the Ghost Whisperer hoody to be very roomy. I'll be able to layer numerous times or I'll simply have too much room. I have gone to a L in the Stretch Ozonic and it fits well but will be getting a L in one of the same jackets you're looking at.

The overall weight is listed as 1lb 3oz, could you provide the fill weight?
