    The science of sleep.

Science can do amazing things—test-tube meat, anybody?—but few innovations are as awesome as the Marmot Ion 20-Degree Sleeping Bag. At well under two pounds, it's nearly as light as Marmot's category leading ultralight down bags, but the Ion has a major advantage: it's filled with a combination of down and synthetic insulation, so it's equipped to handle wet conditions without turning into a soggy, sloppy, and icy mess. Marmot mapped its 850-fill down and Thermal R Micro synthetic insulation to provide ultralight and water-resistant warmth in strategic spots and wrapped it inside nylon mini ripstop fabrics to make sure snags, sticks, and heavy use don't lead to catastrophic leakages.

The Ion is rated to 20 degrees, so it's perfect for shoulder season expeditions where it might rain, snow, or precipitate in ways you didn't know existed. It also features Marmot's dual zipper design, which combines a full-length zipper on one side with a half-length zip on the other, so you can increase ventilation or sit up comfortably in your tent without having to get out of your bag. A wrap-around footbox and drawcord hood also team up to keep your extremities toasty.

    Lightweight Bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I like the warmth and weight of this bag. My issue using this bag at its lower temperature limits is, and this not unique to this bag as most bags put more insulation on the top than the bottom, my moving around in the night leaves the bag oriented wrong and the synthetic MicroR bottom is now my side of the bag and I get cold. I get the idea of using a thin synthetic on the bottom, makes sense, but theory meets reality at temperatures below freezing for side sleepers who move around a lot.

    Light and warm!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is a great deal! It has almost identical specs to Marmots Full Down Plasma 15 but costs 260 dollars less! The 2 things that you seem to loose out on is the foot box is a tad narrow and the compressibility is not going to be as good as the Plasma but its 3oz lighter and rated to the same temp!

Rating seems to be accurate as well, took it down to 22 degrees in the wind rivers this last weekend and did not feel any cold spots. The foot box seems to be well overstuffed to keep your toes nice and warm.

The thing I love about this bag the most is the hood, It feels more like down jacket hood than a sleeping bag hood and that helps the bag move with me as a roll around during the night. I never woke up with the face hole at the back of my head like I normally do with more traditional hoods.

I'm 6 foot 170 lbs and I could have used a tad more width but it wasn't tight enough for me to be uncomfortable. I would not recommend it for bigger guys though. And the regular length fit me just right, If you are taller than me though you probably want to size up.

All in all its a pretty great bag for those of you looking for an ultralight bag at a budget price!

Where abouts is the synthetic fill on this bag?

Hey James, the synthetic Thremal R micro is on the bottom of the bag. The idea is that we have found out that when insulation is compressed, especially down, the insulating properties go out the window. Reach out to me directly with any further questions.
