Why We Like The Black Diamond Recon X Beacon

We slip the Black Diamond Recon X Beacon into its harness and clip it to our chest before striding onto the skintrack. The compact design and low-profile harness sit comfortably and discreetly under our shell, barely noticeable on the climb and drop, but in the event of a slide, it's easy to retrieve and slide into search mode. With three antennas and interference protection, this beacon pinpoints burial sites quickly and accurately, while the flagging function lets us mark and move on with the press of a button.

Good beacon, bad harness

The velcro closure on the harness is terrible. With the way it's stitched, it requires an unreasonable amount of force to open, and after doing one avalanche safety course I'm already seeing the velcro start to degrade because of it. It seems ridiculous that BD/Pieps designed a worse harness for the Recon X when they could just sell it with the same harness that the Guide gets. One other point vs the Guide - why does the Recon X get half the battery life despite having fewer features and the same batteries? As for the actual beacon, I like it. Very easy to use, and accurate. The lock for the slider switch IS a bit finicky like some review sites have said, and it could definitely be better, but IMO it's not a big deal.

Pretty good beacon

Range is stated as 60 meters, during testing wouldn't always pick up signal until 45. Otherwise easy to use, doesn't beep super loud which might be a con?

A must for the backcountry

Recently took an AIARE AVY1 course and they all used this. Figured this must be an industry standard or something. I have used it a couple times myself since I purchased it. Easy to use, good UI, reliable.

Super user friendly

It was extremely easy to setup and sync with my phone, instructions are straightforward and easy to understand, and I hope I never need to use it.

Great Beacon!

Definitely recommend this beacon! I have found it to be very accurate and reliable. Only lost a star because I recently took an AIARE course and this was the last of all the beacons in the group to pick up a signal (around 28m) during multiple searches. Still, once it connects it is very accurate.

Best beacon value on the

Best beacon value on the market. Excellent range, fast processor and intuitive to use. I have tested most of the beacons currently available and though there are other more sophisticated models available this is my top recommendation.

Haven't died in a slide... yet

Good range and minimal lag. The user interface is simple and intuitive. I've tested it with multiple burials and the signal suppression is excellent, even with multiple brands of beacon involved. Very good performance for the price. My only gripe is that I wish it had a lanyard that wasn't sewn into the harness. I prefer to carry my beacon in a chest pocket, and I had to make my own lanyard for this.
