From chunky, rock-strewn singletrack to gravel backroads and flowing cross-country loops, the Santa Cruz Chameleon 27.5+ R1 upholds its adaptable namesake with versatility that's practically impossible to match in the realm of aluminum hardtails. Keeping up with the ever-evolving standards of modern trail bikes, the 2017 Chameleon sports a longer front end, low-slung bottom bracket of 12.4 inches, snappy-short 16.3-inch chainstays, and a relaxed 67.5-degree head tube angle. These geometry figures equate to a well-balanced bike that's confident ripping steep descents, yet one that's always eager to climb back up to do it all again.
Although the Chameleon has always been renowned for its adaptability to a wide variety of terrain, it's really outdone itself with the newest version boasting the ability to swap between 27.5+ and 29-inch wheels, courtesy of its interchangeable dropouts. These interchangeable dropouts allow you to swap out the gears for singlespeed use, should you desire a no-nonsense drivetrain that excels in topographically-challenged areas or simply enjoy pushing your bike without pesky gears. 15 millimeters of fore and aft adjustment manages chain tension and chainstay length.
This particular build enjoys the bump-gobbling plushness and glue-like traction afforded by its 27.5+ wheels with plus-sized tires. The spec'd 2.8-inch tubeless tires allow you to drastically reduce pressure for smoother tracking across the rough stuff, as well as unrelenting grip when you're railing berms and riding on trails with loose, sandy soil. Because of its plus-sized tires, you'll find the Chameleon not only to be an excellent choice for trails with loose chunder and rock gardens, but also for lengthy bikepacking adventures where the added shock absorption equates to less fatigue.
Seeing it boasts the highest spec'd R1 kit available on the Chameleon 27.5+, we'd be amiss to not mention its excellent Fox Rhythm 120mm fork. The Rhythm 120 takes full advantage of the equipped Boost thru-axles with its stiff 34-millimeter stanchions deflecting torsional forces when you're rallying over rock gardens and plunging into minefields of loose rubble. Another noteworthy upgrade, the SRAM NX 1x11 drivetrain simplifies the shifting experience without giving up much usable range. In fact, its 10-42 tooth cassette gives you plenty of low-end for climbing up and over imposing trail obstacles and steep switchbacks.
