Best of both worlds.
Climbers who prefer single pitches usually look for assisted braking belay devices due to the extra security, while multi-pitchers and alpinists search for lightweight, compact devices. Fortunately, you just found Edelrid's Mega Jul Sport Belay Device—an assisted braking device that's lighter and more compact than standard tube devices. This robust, stainless steel belay device boasts a high braking friction and a versatile performance for lead belaying, top rope belaying, abseiling, rappelling, and more.
- Lightweight and compact assisted braking device
- High braking friction assists with lead falls
- The thumb loop helps belayer dish out plenty of slack
- Item #ELR0039
- Q & A
Light, simple and (mostly) foolproof
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
When my home gym implemented a new ABD (assisted braking device) policy, I was hesitant to give up my trusty ATC-Guide. I did not want the weight and cost associated with the GriGri, so I chose the MegaJul and now wonder what I did without it. Compared to other tube-style belay devices, the MegaJul has much greater control over how quickly the rope feeds through. Rope diameters between 9.5 and 10 seem to feed best, but your results may vary.
Belaying from the top is a bit tricky, so I still prefer the ATC-Guide for multi-pitch. That said, if you're working hard on single pitch sends or want the added security of an ABD without the cost then the MegaJul is for you!
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This belay device is amazing. It has similar assisted braking properties as a gri-gri but you can easily repel like a traditional tuber. This device is much easier to operate than it's predecessor. It can be frustrating at first, but once you learn the nuances and tricks with operating this device it is second nature. When lead belaying this is my go to device. While climbing it's also light enough like to keep it on my harness for emergencies. Elderid has definitely stepped the game up with this device.
