Why We Like The Major Bear Bag

Prevent pesky bears from snagging a midnight snack with the Major Bear Bag from Ursack. Made with "bulletproof" material, the Major Bear Bag can withstand attacks from creatures or critters as it's suspended with the 6-foot tensile cord from a nearby tree. And it's easy enough to set-up in camp that you'll be able to clean the dishes and protect the rest of your food fast enough to squeeze in a few games of rummy before calling it a night.

Heavy duty bear hang bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The packaging of the sack is nice looking. The labeling says that it is bear resistant, but that certain critters may create small holes. That would make this less useful if you were traveling in an area where mice were a problem. Like a bear bag or bear canister they do recommend that you deploy it separately away from your camp at night. they also mention other accessories like an aluminum liner to prevent crushing and puncture, as well as an odor barrier bag that they sell. My experience is that this would serve fine as a bear bag, but would not replace a bear canister. In areas where a bear bag is required, it will still be necessary to hang the bag. In an area where a bear canister is required, you might get a ticket if found using this container instead. It does say that it is certified resistant by the interagency grizzly bear committee, but this is likely not accepted by many management agencies like the national forest service or national Park service. while they do not say what the fabric blend is, it feels like it contains Kevlar to me. Closing the bear bag is simple in theory, but may be difficult for people with limited strength in their hands and or arms. I plan to use this as a heavy duty bear hang bag. It is slightly heavier than a typical nylon bag, but it would certainly hold up to abrasion better than a normal bag. I would not leave it on the ground at night.

Durable and great shape

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was pleasantly surprised by this food sack, it’s so durable and still super light. I was especially fond of the shape of the bag which makes it great for maximizing the space.

Great quality!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Lightweight yet extremely durable alternative to traditional bear canisters. Lightweight but can hold up to 5 days worth of food for one person!

Camping essential!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have not had a chance to use this yet but it feels like quality fabric and I love that it's made in the USA. Will be a great thing to bring camping over the summer.

Thick woven material and high tensile cord

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This bag is definitely made of thick, woven material that will prevent bears from ripping into your stored food. It is designed to fit into a backpack. The material is thick and strong and although most things can be punctured by a bear claw or crushed, I don’t see this bag being ripped apart.

PRODUCT FAILURE - DO NOT BUY

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This product totally fails and should be discontinued. When a bear finds it, even when used exactly as instructed, the bear will claw it open and get all the food. Here's a picture of my breached bag. All the food was gone, the only thing remaining was the correctly tied bag and a bunch of torn up food wrappers on the ground. The company that makes this product is doing a huge disservice to bears and people. Bears that get a taste of people food never go back. They become extremely dangerous and have to be destroyed. Save yourself and save a bear, don't buy this product.

7 day backpack with few issues

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Just returned from a 7 day backpack trip. I started with 8 lbs of food in my Ursak major. I like the fact that is conformable to the shape of the food saving space in my pack. The rope they use is easy to tie and untie without knots getting difficult. I had no opportunity to see if it would withstand a bear attack, but I also saw no indication of smaller critters getting at my food either. One suggestion I have is cover the bag with a plastic trash bag when you hang it as it is not water proof and becomes much heavier once it is wet.

Peace of Mind

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used this once, for a six day high altitude backpacking trip. Watched a frustrated chipmunk chew at it for about five minutes before it gave up. Nary a mark. Looking forward to more trips with this worthy product. If you spend a lot of time in bear country, you might wanna choose a bear vault, but otherwise the Ursack does the trick. Make sure to tie it well, as lil rodents can squeeze through a keyhole. (I throttle tie it around the top.)
